My turn, if you connect the bottom of the header tank to the left hand side ( near side) hot side expansion side of the rad, then connect a hose to the filler neck of the rad which is also the hot/expansion side of the rad. So if we use a 13 mm hose into the bottom of the header tank
And a 8 mm hose in the top of the tank we have opposing forces while heating up. We will have coolant trying to expand up both hoses the 13 mm will overcome the 8 mm and push air trapped in the top of the header back into the rad. If we wish to draw coolant back into the rad from the header tank why would connect it to the hot side of the rad not logical B L in there wisdom connected the expansion bottle to the cold side in order to draw coolant back. My system has a restricted flow through through the header tank while warming up trapping any air in the top of the tank, as soon as the start opens it then flows through the rad, no problem there then. But as always whatever works for you is fine

disagree there me old china ,you will never push air downhill as you've suggested it will rise and stay trapped at the highest point . i agree that expansion is possible of water up both pipes though .

You just knew I was not going to STF up. Here I go again (oh by the way I am back home ) Gas will dissolve into liquid under pressure and it will only migrate to the surface when the pressure is released. Lemonade bottle the gas will stay in solution until the top is removed the pressure is released and then the gas leaves the solution. Now in this case you have a sealed container full of water with a pipe containing air going into another sealed container, now if you heat the first container the water expands thus compressing the air and forcing it along the tube into the cooler sealed container. That's the theory in practise, when I had mine plumbed that way it allowed air trapped in the top of the header tank to be forced back into the neck of the rad and then accumulated in the top hose so when cooled the top of the rad and the top hose had no coolant in it. As has been said before, it seems there are many solutions to this problems, so I guess if it works it works. Job done

          Hi Graham,

Does this mean that you've changed from your brilliantly simple Land Rover header tank system ? It still seems to work well for me

          Cheers

          Julian

That's worrying, especially after a hot curry!

I disagree, can you show me your hypothesis calculations to support your claim so that it may be analysed openly by the forum to decide if these claims are valid .

              thank you

                  Hi lads,

I find all this rather fascinating as I intend on fitting one eventually. However, I find visualizing the various ways of plumbing a tad difficult, so has anyone made any sketches or suchlike of their favoured solution?

                  Thanks,
                  Joakim

I think you'll find more than enough in the search box. You will get a headache!

Its ok Graham, I don't mind if we show Muffy. This was something Graham and I were discussing on the way back from Spa, and came up with the following:

You're right Jeff, suppose there's more than one way to skin a cat...

I saw there's a rather good write-up on it in the technical section, so will probably draw inspiration from that when the time comes.

                          Cheers,
