    Battery advice

Hadn't run my Stag for a few months and I knew the battery was flat. Jump started it to get going.

Went out for a long drive for a few hours to charge it. Filled up with petrol, and it wouldn't turn over enough for a start - had to call out the breakdown for another jump.

She's back in the dry garage for Winter with a full tank and tyre pressures topped up.

Guessing it needs a new battery. Scouring the forums tells me I need an 072?

I won't be driving it anyway for a few months so thinking I just worry about this in the Spring and get a new battery then... unless any advice to contrary?

Regardless of anything else, I would get yourself a modern battery charger and try charging it up fully to see if it takes and holds a charge. If it does, then that may be the end of your problems. But if you took it for a really long run and it failed then that would indicate your alternator isn't working well enough, that is once you've established that the battery is in fact ok via the charger. An alternator check is something a local garage can test for you.

It's most likely a battery at end of life, where it can't accept a charge, or the alternator is underperforming, as Paul suggests. Agree it's worth getting a smart charger such as the CTEK to see if the battery can be recovered somewhat. Both Lidl and Aldi have offered similar smart charging functionality at seriously cheaper prices and I've heard good feedback from users. Worth checking their websites to see if they're still available.

+1 for the Aldi smart charger. Also I only buy AGM type batteries for cars that aren't used every day, they hold a charge much better.

Only problem is I have no power supply in the garage which is a little walk from home. It's quite a lot of hassle to take it out to try and charge it when the price of a new battery isn't that much more than a charger

You need to check your particular battery, noting which is the negative and which is the positive terminal. Some owners rewired their installations to switch them around. If the battery does need replacing you'll need to move the power steering pump out of the way.

An alternator chucks out a higher current than most domestic chargers, so if the battery wouldn't take a charge from a long run then my money would be on the battery being dead.

If the alternator is working then your volt gauge should show 14V.

It showed 14 volts when the engine was running. When turned off and then trying to start the engine, it didn't register on the dial (but had power because interior lights were on) when it wouldn't start

When you buy a new battery, make sure you buy a modern, small one with the utmost power - plus take one without a rim at the bottom (e.g. Dynalite Asia 560) . The old ones a very difficult to put into the car, as they are too big (or the battery compartment is too small?).
                  Godd luck, Dieter from Germany.

I recently bought and fitted one of these

                    YBX1075

Yuasa suggest this one which has the terminals transposed. But check the size, it is slightly bigger than the one I bought (which I know fits).

                    YBX1072

As I wrote earlier, your car could be wired for either style of terminals.

My 'fleet', besides my daily driver, consists of a Midget and Stag, on which the alarms can frequently cause the batteries to run down below the starting power required. I purchased a starter pack from Machine Mart which solves the starting problem and can be put in the boot to use if a road trip proves too short to put in enough charge.
