    Engine block questions

    I managed to source a Stag engine. The engine failed due to a bad rebuild. The heads were over skimmed and a valve impacted a piston and put a hole through it. The block appears to have been re-bored with new pistons. I have found a reputable source for a good used piston along with a good used conrod. It seems that when an engine is rebuilt the pistons and rods need to be within a certain weight of each other . I've heard 0.5 grams. is this number about right? Based on this, I'm assuming at the very least I have to disassemble the block and remove all the pistons and rods is this also correct?

    Yes your need to disassemble the block to weight the pistons and rods

      I consider having every engine I ever rebuilt dynamically balanced at the machine shop money well spent..

      Just dug my bill out, The Stag engine was $200.

        You can they have lots of V8s in the states, its a lot more expensive over here

          I would consider any test or treatment a good investment for our Triumph V8 engines.They are fabulous when on song, but awfully expensive when someting is amiss. If I were rebuilding one, I'd have everyting balanced if I could. Of course, you have to make sure the machine shop knows what they are doing.

              I was quoted 400 to have it balanced and 480 to be hot cleaned

                Yes, I think that is the case, probably 70% of the work they get here are V8’s and all a lot bigger than my little TV8!

                It was also on top of the rebore, crank regrind and head job so maybe I also got a bit of a break!

                  Mind you he was a good old boy, retired now.. I'll have to go to somewhere slicker (and more expensive) next time.
