    Stagdad water pump.

I am saving up to get the external water pump for next summer for my Sapphire blue Stag. I got it on the Red Stag...still going strong and still with the belt I put on it many, many years ago.
Best and the first mod I ever done...super easy.
    Donations will be most welcome.

I fitted one earlier this year. Not for any reason other than unfounded Stag Paranoia. It was 7 years and 24,000 miles since I last had the OE water pump out and I was concerned it might be wearing, but when I removed it it was fine and would be fit for many years of further service.

I hope we don't all give up on the original water pump (WP), as obviously it can last a very long time, but I do understand why some have converted. I am still on the original except I fitted the ceramic seal face on the impeller that Peter at LD used to sell. Still working well after several years so fingers crossed.

My only negative WP experience was on a lockdown project car, which was overheating. I found that the helical gears on both pump and jackshaft were worn away and were slipping. Lucky it didnt lock them up!

Just because I am inquisitive, I have examined a few original pumps that were sold as reconditioned, but were not fit for purpose. Most had a very tight seal that would probably overload the pump/jackshaft gear (**), but a couple also found impellers that were not properly locked to the shaft, and were so loose I could even turn them by hand! Beware if you are buying recon pumps!

** Credit to Julian / JBuckl who alerted me to the binding seal issue and other possible issues.

I fitted a Stagdad pump for 4 reasons
1- I always had a small leak into the Vee because of leakage passed the carbon seal. Machining the underside of the impeller helps but not as good as the ceramic seal which is no longer available.
2- one pump shaft stripped the helical gear, examination showed it was completely unhardened. This required a full engine strip.
3- I hate having to remove the inlet manifold just to get at the pump
4- Basically a poor design with the pump near the highest point in the system, a problem waiting to happen.

on my first Stag I replaced the original pump with an Electric Craig Davis pump, worked well but didn’t offer the simplicity of the ‘fit and forget’ manual pump

A funny thing - back in the day I had a Dolly Sprint, which has the same water pump as the Stag. That car was thrashed mercilessly (I was a lot younger then in my defense) and I never once worried about the water pump, and it never gave any problems. There was no internet to make me worry about it either.

Mind you - the viscous cooling fan drive did let go...........
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

The Dolly sprint is a more docile, tame and forgiving car then the Stag.

Only problem with the Sprint, mine included when I had it, was they blew head gaskets more than the stag.
                      Great car though!

Must have been lucky on mine - mind you it NEVER was given the beans until thoroughly warmed through, a habit I persist with to this day. I do wonder about PHEVs - when the ICE can be called on high outputs from stone cold after running on battery power.

thanks … my dearly bought experience with unfit parts has been shared a few times this year …. Hopefully prevents too much of the same.
