    Heated window replacement.

    Evening Folks

Is it easy to replace the Heated Rear Window?

I am trying to work out if it is worth me trying to do it or leave it alone.

    Regards

    Dave

I did this a couple of years ago using a kit from Frost Fighter: https://www.socforum.com/forum/forum...ow-seal-812220

There is also a paper in the Technical Section, which I used: https://www.socforum.com/forum/forum...-window-repair

Before fitting the roof I checked I had 12V between the two supply points at the top of the B posts, and now I have 0V at the heated window connections.

I am reasonably sure I need new hard top electrical connectors, but as I haven't yet fixed up the roof hoist I cannot get under the roof to fit them.

I measured 12 Ohms across the heated window (electrical connections removed).

Can some kind person please tell me if this is normal resistance for a good window? I don't want to spend ages only to find I only have two elements working, I would rather find if Tony had a working glass or try the rebuild kit as per Dave's info.

        Regards

12Ω sounds about right - that makes for a ~12W heater. Mine has three faulty stripes so I wouldn't be able to tell what resistance mine is!

You should be able to tell if you have 12V between one of the HRW connectors at the window and any chassis point on the car. If you do, then you can connect the other side to a chassis point and see if the window heats up. If you don't have 12V at one end of the window, check the fuses again. I would also disconnect the HRW from the wiring and arrange seperate connections to the battery to test the window itself, there's many connections in the circuit and it's best to check them all before ordering a new window!

            Thanks Richard.

Good idea to have separate supply to test it.

Frost Fighter kits have gone up quite a bit - $59.95 for the kit, plus $67.65 cheapest shipping! That's $127.55, and then UK Customs will add their handling charge plus 20% VAT.....:-( Looks like it will be £135 all in, plus the rear window seal.

I have 3 elements out and will try to paint over the gaps. I tried this in the 80's and failed miserably.

Has anyone succeeded in bridging the element gaps?

I tried this twice over the past two years, with different repair kits. Neither worked, it seems that the metal traces on the screen have oxidised over the 50 years and the paint isn't able to make ae electrical connection. I am just waiting right now before ordering a Frost Fighter kit - a friend may be coming over from the USA and if they bring the kit that will save me half the cost!

An extra thought, if anyone wants to do a deal, we could order several kits and the shipping cost per kit would be much lower.

Sounds a good idea to me Richard. Count me in for one.

Do you scrape off the original element?

Yes, but it will leave lines. The new elements can be used to hide them.

Thanks Dave. I have since been reading info on an old post about fitting one. Sounds a good idea. Hopefully we can get a few interested to reduce postage costs.

As it worked out, I ended up ordering a Frost 2609 Stick Kit on my own. I haven't fitted it yet, that's a job for another weekend, but I thought you should all be aware of the unpleasant effects of the hike in shipping rates. The kit cost me $60 (£53.80) which seems reasonable, but the shipping for a small box (36x9x9cm) weighing only 300g was £66.20. This was the cheapest option available - it must be that US companies don't want to sell to the UK. Checking just now, if I order five kits, the shipping would be £150, or £30 each. For a small 300g box!
