    Play in steering wheel.

Just had my steering completely overhauled by Stag specialist but there seems to be a bit of play still in there. Was told it was due to backlash in the rack, is this true?

      Hi Terry,
I've had the following work carried out : 2 steering column bushes, lower shaft, steering column bearing tensioner clamp, steering column bush and thrust kit fitted. Seems no different to before to be honest. Have been told rack is fine and that it's down to back lash in the rack. I hate play in the steering so was hoping all the rebushing of the whole suspension front and back, new track rod ends, all suspension and steering system checked would cure it so not much I can do really. Car feels amazing after all this work it's just the play in the steering that's bugging me.

        Peter.
At the risk of repeating previous advice, are you checking for slack with the engine running? If not, there will be backlash, as it is a characteristic of the way in which the valve system works.

The video you posted did not have the engine running, it’s hard to judge without feeling it but it looks similar to mine.

Inside the rack the steering shaft is not solidly connected with the rack, there is a torsion rod that twists a little before the steering wheel actually connects up via a pair of dog teeth. This twisting is what opens the valves to allow the pressurised oil to be fed to the appropriate side of the rack and is fundamentally how it works. It’s less obvious when the engine is running but it’s still there.

If, as you say, it feels great otherwise then maybe it’s just that.

                Hi Terry,
It's exactly the same when the engine is running to be honest. The company I used did a lovely job on the car, it's just I really don't like play in my steering but if that's the best I can do then so be it. Were they like this out of the factory?
