BW65 fluid capacity?

Please can somebody advise me regarding this? I have searched but haven't been able to find the definitive answer - all I found was a comment on FB that the 65 takes 5.4L, whereas the 35 takes 8.0L. I'm just putting fluids in, getting ready to fire up the rebuilt engine - the transmission has been fully overhauled so will be completely empty of fluid, except for maybe a small amount in the cooler.

According to the Haynes manual the "Automatic transmission", which would have been for the 65, it is 6.5 litres. Presumably this would include the torque convertor and cooler?
I bet someone out there has the definitive answer.

I had been looking at my downloaded version of the ROM, which only covers the 35, and forgot about my Haynes manual. Now I look it does in fact state 5.4L for the 65.

I've just had my 65 rebuilt, I was advised to put 1 litre in the torque converter and then, once fitted, add 6.5 to 7 litres, nearly 8 litres in total.

Crikey - some varying opinions here.... I have put 5.0L in so far, and it's right up the stick. I guess I'll see where it's at after I've had the engine running and let the stuff pump around a bit.

A suction pump helps to easily remove a bit if it is overfilled. ‘Pela’ brand is what I bought…. It’s been very useful. No need to grovel if you don’t have a ramp

Even more confused now....today we fired up the engine for the first time since it was rebuilt - yay! However, on checking the trans fluid after running the engine for a few minutes it wasn't registering on the stick at all. Added a bit more fluid - now at 5.4L per the Haynes manual - but still not on the stick. At this time I have put an approximate total of 6.4L in and the level is just nudging into the "cold" area on the stick. In case anybody is thinking that maybe I have a BW35, not 65 - no. it's definitely a 65.

This Service Bulletin (in the Technical Section) was issued when the BW35 was the normal Stag box, but it may well apply to the BW65:

You also are filling up the oil cooler and pipework.

Hmm.. Haynes says 5.4L for Type 65 auto transmission with oil cooler. I wouldn’t expect them to be excluding the torque converter?

You are going the right way about it. The quoted capacities are very vague. Do they include the torque converter and cooler, or not? I am surprised there is not some more accurate information available somewhere.
If you keep topping up a bit at a time, running the engine, and selecting through the gears one by one, the level will eventually stabilise, then a short run should clear out any air left in the system.
Hopefully you will have kept a careful note of how much fluid it finally took, for the future benefit of the rest of us!

I would guess around 7 - 8 litres as the Stag uses the large case 11" converter. You don't need accurate info as you have a dipstick. The procedure we use & have done since I started in the auto gearbox trade in1979 is:-

(Before you fit the gearbox there should be no oil in the cooler because you will have cleaned it out - won't you? If not then you will send dirty oil straight into you new transmission.)

Add 3 litres (no need to add oil to the converter, that just makes a mess!), start engine DO NOT REV IT. Let it idle for 5 - 10 seconds. Switch off.

Add another 3 litres, start engine leave at idle & run the selector through from P to 1 a couple of times pausing for a couple of seconds in each range. Leave engine running. You should have some drive now.

Add oil to the correct level on the dipstick. If difficult to get a clear reading leave it for 5 mins to let the majority of the oil drain from the insides of the dipstick tube, sometimes you cannot get a clear reading due to splash (much worse on the BW35) in which case have the dipstick ready, kill the engine & dip immediately. Set level to the bottom mark on the stick then check again when hot & set it to the top mark.

I'm sure there are others on here that will know better though - there nearly always is!!
