    Speedo

    My speedometer needle flutters, any one know how to fix.is a new gauge required?

    I had the same problem,my car was a manual, i changed the speedo cable and the drive gear in the gearbox,also angle drive, my speedo is now great
    73 mk 1/2 now gone to the dark side BLUE

        New cable alone fixed mine, used to twitch especially when just starting a journey, only got a little better.
        New cable and problem sorted.

          First thing to look at would be the cable. Check the route to see if all the bends are smooth and there are no kinks. Remove the cable from the back of the speedometer head and withdraw the inner cable, checking for wear and damage. Lubricate the inner cable with light oil (3-in-one) as you feed it back in, but do not oil the top 6 inches, as you do not want oil in the speedo head.

            I think its a mixture off all of the above,i had changed the angle drive before,but this time i bought all the parts from LD parts but did have to modify his angle drive,his ones are better made than most others

              I had a floaty speedo and got a replacement speedo since the odometer had failed anyway. It was still fluttering when I fitted it and i then lubed the cable and that sorted it. It now shows 40 rather than 35 to 45 ish!

                They float/flutter due to a tight inner cable as has been said, what happens is the cable binds & slow/stops momentarily, winds itself up then suddenly releases which give you the needle movement. It all happens in a fraction of a second of course. All the cures are already listed above.
