Recommendations on driving a Stag with OD

I've been getting used to driving Stag no.2. It is a manual with J Type OD. Here are a few questions.
I've been told that the ratio of 3rd with OD is less than in 4th and there are times when you are cruising in third, but you feel that shifting into 4th doesn't have enough pull, but 3rd seems to race. In my case, I let the car scream in third and then shift into 4th. So far I rarely, use 3rd + OD. Is this a personal choice?
When I'm in 4th + OD and I'm down shifting to slow down, do I down shift into 4th (switch off OD) or shift down to 3rd + OD or downshift to 3rd no OD? (I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but the OD is from a Dolomite Sprint)
You can save the comments about whether to press the clutch when shifting out of OD to another thread.
My last manual car was a 3-cylinder, 1000cc 5 speed Daihatsu Charade '88 which I sold in 2005.

Personally I rarely use od in 3rd and take it out before changing down from 4th. Tend not to downshift to use engine braking to slow down as I don't believe it does the gearbox any good.

round town with a 30mph limit 3rd is a great gear and when traffic starts to move I flick 3rd o/d rather than changing gear.

If I do need to go to 4th though, I do need to remember that o/d has been engaged else the 4th with o/d ratio will be too high, so I disengage 3rd flick the o/d off, engage 4th which is more or less the same revs and then get on with having a fabulous day

I find very little difference between 3rd O/D and 4th without O/D, so I don't usually bother. I do find if I accidentally drop down to 3rd O/D from 4th O/D, that it cunches the gears (Mk2 with J-type O/D).. Very ocassionally, according to traffic conditions, I might use 3rd and 3rd O/D, but normally 4th is OK as that great V8 has bags of low-down torque.

I only tend to use OD third when I am really hammering it in third and its about to hit the red line on the rev counter. Saves having to do a gear change when overtaking.
Don't do it often (red line in third is a "little" over the speed limit)
Otherwise I just use OD as a 5th gear

Great when overtaking & pulling hard in 3rd, just flick the O/D in whilst keeping the little pedal buried & she pulls like a train! Puts a big smile on my face!

My OD works on 2nd, 3rd and 4th frequently doing split changes both up and down. All changes happen instantly and positively. I don't use 1st OD due to the torque of the V8. I find 2nd OD is very useful around town.
When I was racing (Spitfire) 2nd OD was used all the time as it neatly filled the 2nd/3rd gear gap and kept the engine up on power.

Only time I use 3 OD Is when I’m stuck behind a car doing a lowish speed on a back road with hills.. (not sure but maybe 35?) and it’s not always quite enough to go to 4th..so it’s a compromise.

In my TR third OD was great when rushing down back roads but not so much on the Stag.

As far as going down the gears from 4thOD it depends.. sometimes drop it out before changing down, sometimes drop it as I change down but I never go through 3rd OD

I use all the gears + OD and treat it like a six speed box going up but 4 speed going down. I find OD third in use very frequently particularly on country lanes and round town so slightly confused by some of the comments above. OD 3rd is also handy for a boost or overtake. I do recollect my original stag back in the 80's could hit 96 in OD 3rd before changing up to 4th gear and made the car very responsive. Wouldn't dream of pushing my 51 yr old like that though!

??? Why is that? We rebuild them (gearboxes, manual & auto) & that's news to me.

I was once told that I drive the "old fashioned" way i.e using engine braking.. his reasoning was that brakes are cheaper and easier to replace than clutches..

                      It didn't change me!
