I recall there was a wavy washer at the top of the column from my parts book. but i could not find it anywhere. There is a wavy washer at the bottom. I wonder if that can work.

There is a much better option than the awful wavy washer. It is a metal ring that slides down the column, and is locked in place by two small Allen screws. This allows you to make sure that all the free play in the taper bearings is eliminated before locking it in place. I think most of the spares crowd sell them
