Clutch Release Bearing

Suggestions needed for a reputable supplier of a "correct profile" clutch release bearing.

I don't want the so called 'Heavy Duty' one which is actually a Toyota Landcruiser Bearing
and makes the pedal too heavy due to incorrect profile.

The last one I had (from what was supposed to be a reptuable supplier - no names) was the correct profile
but unbranded and lasted about 1200 miles & 14 months before sqealing like a pig !!! in cold weather. Now it needs changing again.

A quick bit of research has shown that "Powertune" is all that's available - made in Taiwan !.

Just looked up the receipt, was actually purchased March 2019 (fitted in April 2019) & approx 2300 miles covered.

I'm not sure it is entirely his fault as it's all that's available with the correct profile.

A trawl of various forums turns up varying results, some swear by them & others won't go near them.

I have an old one that had done about 5 years & 10,000 miles service & it too is a "Powertune".
I kept it as it still feels really smooth & was silent in operation.

Not sure what to do now, I am tempted to put that used one back in rather than buy another and
risk pot luck on getting a good one.

Hi Neil, try Moss motors, based in Chiswick . They sell a TR6 release bearing which is identical to the Stag item. Not cheap at £45. I fitted one to my Stag and works ok.

Can't find that, they only show the powertune one @ £22.80, about the same as everybody else.

These release bearings have been a problem for at least 20 years.. I remember my TR one only lasting a thousand miles or less, I did go Land cruiser back then but seem to remember having to get the carrier turned down a bit.. is that still the case?

No, the Landcruiser is straight fit, trouble is the profile gives a heavier pedal.
(something I need to avoid due occasional problem with left foot)

Can you explain what you mean by the "Correct profile". I think there are at least two types of clutch cover available, each one requiring a different shaped thrust bearing to operate correctly.

Having an arc shaped face as opposed to semicircular one in "Heavy Duty" bearings.
The contact point is closer to the centre, gives a lighter pedal feel.

Not sure about covers requiring different shaped bearings - all suppliers do only one or the other.

Taiwanese Powertune is all that's available in the original profile.

I have this used RHP release bearing, which I would have removed from my MOD Stag. I wouldn’t have kept it if it was faulty. Any use?

Hmm, interesting offer for me to consider.

Only concern I would have with that is how have they been stored, RHP closed in 1989.
So they have 30 year old grease in them, what state is that in now I wonder, still soft grease or turned to treacly tar ?.
Still, I will PM you for a price of one.

Well, got the box off. Only took 1 & 1/2 hours.

It would seem the problem bearing (Powertune) was lacking in grease, no wonder it didn't last.
