    Rear Lights

    Hi,

as I wrote in my last posting (https://www.socforum.com/forum/forum...to-body-gasket) I was working on the rear lights.
I changed the gaskets and the lenses. Therefore I had to remove the reflector-inserts which were glued to the old lenses. I then glued the reflector-inserts to the new lenses using a type of instant glue.

After reassembling everything looked okay. But this morning (5 days later) I found this:

    IMG_3181.jpg

The glue seems to have disolved the plastic of the lenses. I'm pretty shure, that I have not smudged the lenses with glue.
It also looks like the surface of the reflector-inserts is affected.

    So, my questions are:
    - Why are the reflector-inserts glued into the lenses? Is it possible and allowed to inlay them like the other inserts?
    - What type of glue should I use to glue the reflector-inserts to the lenses (which I now have to buy again)?
    - Are the inserts (especially the reflector-inserts) available somewhere?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Regards
    Gerd

The coloured pieces are not glued to anything on mine, just the foil backed reflector part.
For that I used a glue used for plastic models made by Revell, part no 39604.

As already stated, there should be no glue anywhere except on the reflective foil. The colour filters just sit in there. If the glue has permanently damaged yours, I do happen to have a complete rear end set of lenses and filters "Available".
Am I allowed to say that on the Forum or should it be under "Parts for sale" somewhere?

As you have found out, cyanoacrylate “super glue” isn’t suitable for this type of plastic. The fumes ruin the lenses as it cures. ISTR using model kit glue (polystyrene cement) does the job, as indicated by Neil in post #2.

on my both Stags the reflex reflector parts are glued into the clear lens. only one side of the lens is glued. There is a little step on the reflector where glue is applied. I used clear silicone. The red and Amber covers are no glued.

First step is to remove the lamp cover from inside the boot (2 screws) and the bracket to which it is attached (2 screws). Then you have to take off the bulb holders and remove the lamp backboard. Next step is to remove the lamp housing (5 screws). The lenses are fixed by 4 lugs to the lamp housing which you have to gently push in- and downwards.

Thank you for your responses. An other set of lenses and reflectors are on the way to me. Before I use glue on these I will firstly check with the old ones that the Revell glue I ordered does not harm the lenses.

Got to be a lesson to us all, check on there first as someone has always repaired , broken, *ucked it, replaced it or modified it before.

                      Saves money too

no need to remove the lights to change the cover. when u get the new covers you can see the tabs on the lens. use a putty knife on your old covers. be gentle . you may want to change the gasket as well. I glued in the gasket as ones I have shrunk . the part near the indicator comes out last.

Do it in a warm environment. The lens covers can crack if cold.
