Lost headlights on dipped beam both sides

    Hello again Stag folks

I seem to have lost both headlights on dipped beam,I have checked both fuses but that ia about asfar as my electrickery skills go.

Would anybody be able to advise me in simple terms please of a good place to start.
I do have a mutimeter, but not very sure on how to put it to use on this problem

    Many thanks
Any advise would be much appreciated

Remove the plastic covers from the steering column and check the connectors in the wiring harness, unplug them and look for bent, pushed back or corroded pins.

Look carefully at the blue wires and their connections.

also look at the connections to the master light switch.

I would say check the light switch, but before you do that make sure the earth is okay going to the headlights

Hi Folks and Happy New yr.

Im still trying to solve my non working HID headlights.Ive had no trouble with them in the last 8 or so years, although probably only been on for about 20hrs in that time not being a night time driver.

So far I have followed your advice and removed steering column shrouds upper and lower and checked the connections all good,

Tried a replaced main light switch with loom no difference

Ive tested voltage at the fuses for dipped beam on both L and R and it reads 12.4 or so on both with Red lead on the fuse and black to earth.

Ive pulled all the connection blocks from main light switch and cleaned reassembled ,no corrosion or damage present

I am not very confident in using my multi meter but very keen to improve, can someone tell me in idiots guide language which is the terminal that comes off the main light switch feeds the Hd light dipped and how to test with meter the relevant parts of the switch,i know brown is the live.

The only work that has been done on the car is radio removal and refit does anyone know if any of the headlight wiring runs behind the radio and this may have been damaged putting back the radio?

As mentioned earlier the dipped beams are HID and they have ballasts, can anyone tell me

What further tests I can do with a multimeter and what I can do to test the HIDs

I know thats a long post ,but I would be extremely gratefull for any pointers

            Many Thanks in advaance

you didnt say they were HIDs,your have a driver/ballast , your probably find the ballest either behind the headlights or by the inner wing, check you have supply feeding the ballest

Thank you,I know where the connections for the ballast are because i fitted them, but just dont know how to test with meter ie where to put the probes as I said Im keen to learn but dont know whether to test the bulb socket ,the ballast or otherwise for a reading ,

Should I always use black probe to an earth and red probe to what i think is the live feed and test for a voltage reading or continuity, and I pressume im testing with switch to ON setting?
Sorry for being so thick on this stuff

I do know that I need to test check the earth connections to each light, I really need an idiots guide of the places to start and how to test in the correct sequence to illiminate wrong suspects

                Thank you for your patience

Yes easiest way to test would be where you connected the ballest to the original stag lights, and yes the black lead from the meter goes to earth and red lead goes to positive supply side

would this be testing for continuity, voltage or amps?

                    Thank you

                      Mark

first off all test for voltage, put black lead from meter to original black lead at the light plug, and the red lead from meter to the supply from original lights,if you dont get any voltage move the black lead from meter to the earth of the battery,if you now get a voltage you have a bad earth connection, hope that helps

My dipped lights failed a couple of years ago.
Was simply the earth connection that needed cleaning up.

                              Hi Dave ,
I have followed your guidence and cannot get a voltage reading on the original res and blue live and the black earth, also eath to battery earth
I also tried a H1 bulb in the light on original connections and that didnt work.

Could you please advise where to go next

                              Thanks Mark
