    Minor Electrical problem..Car JUST stops!

Went out for a paper to the shops about 600 yds car just stopped complete cut-out, engine will turn but no sign of starting, after a moment I twiddled with the distributor and the coil went back and it fired uo, I went home, this AM did the same and the car packed up in almost exactly the same spot, did identical twiddling and it fired up again, very strange of course I have no real conviction that the "twiddling" has actually helped, bit worried about trusting the car now as it is my only transport, I would have guessed that it was actually fuel as it died in almost exactly the same place, like its using a carburettor full of fuel, so I'mthinking the fuel pump..but why does it restart after 5 minutes or so?

When the car stops, can you still hear if the fuel pump is ticking, the fuel cut of switch may need cleaning ?

if the engine stops dead rather than spluttering and losing power it is more likely to be ignition than fuel. the engine will run for a fair time with fuel in the carb float chambers.

Sounds like an ignition wiring problem to me - poor connection or conductor broken inside the insulation maybe?

Check the connectors in wires to distributor for corrosion and bad contacts. If it's optical check the slotted disk for breakage. Also check the inertia cutout for bad contacts if power to electronic ignition is taken from the fuel pump side.

The Lumenition rectangular 3 pin plug is notorious for poor connections leading to failure if this is the type of ignition. Close up the female sockets and this will often fix it
