New headlights - whose do you recommend?

    Evening All

When I came to fit some Nightbreaker bulbs to our Stag today I noticed that the Cibie reflectors have started to corrode. So I am now on the look out for four new lights. Cibie don't exists anymore having been bought by Valeo.

I am struggling to find Valeo (Cibie) or Hella units suitable for a Stag.

Looking at the Wipac units I think they are plastic where as Ii would prefer glass.

I am inclined to avoid Lucas products these days as the modern stuff is only Lucas in name not quality due to its change of onwership.

    Any suggestions please?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Bruce

    P.S. I am also after a pair of 7" for our GT6.

    Hello Bruce,

I believe that Demon Tweeks sells Cibie branded units, although, as you said, they are made now by Valeo. They were certainly listed a few months ago when I was looking to replace my elderly Cibie units, but not cheap!

      Hi Dave

Thanks for replying. I am looking at their site and can't see them? Do you still possess the paperwork with their product code on?

      Regards

In the end, I didn't buy them. I spoke to Ward's (who used to stock them) and they suggested that mine would probably clean up internally with careful wiping of the reflectors- I've yet to give it a go! If it fails, I'll go shopping for a new set.

            Afternoon Dave,

Just whiling away the time before the British GP starts.....
i can confirm that Demon Tweeks did have Cibie headlight units on their website about 3-4 months ago..
I've also seen them on Classic Car Spares website a few months ago.
As others have said, you occasionally get some "New Old Stock" units popping up on eBay/other sites, but prices.....people have been asking about 100 for EACH unit.
I have got Better Car Lighting's "Wipac" units (both inner and outer) and I believe the glasses ARE glass - tapping them (gently !! ) with a screw driver they SOUND like glass, and they FEEL like glass.
(I won't be taking a naked flame near 'em to see if they melt !! ) I'm sure Gil at BCL will be able to advise if they're glass.
Possibly a headlight refurbishment specialist would be able to safely take the Cibies apart and re-silver the reflectors ??

As an aside, some years ago I was looking for replacement 7" headlights (Hella) for a VW Golf Mk1.
There was a local VW breaker who supplied me with enough complete units to enable me to build 2, with good reflectors and glasses.
He advised that it was possible to very carefully scrape away the epoxy securing the glass to the reflector, and to use a "non-setting" type of adhesive/sealant to put the lights back together, which I did.
Maybe the same is possible with the Cibies ?? ......but I'd probably rather have a specialist do it.....

I've expressed this several times on the Forum, the Cibies had the best. most well-defined dip "cut-off" pattern, and a set of 4 (on my Dolly Sprint) produced a really good main and dip beam pattern.

            Anyway, best of luck,
            Stay Safe,

            Neil.

Autopal (India) Use glass front however have the crystal style metal back which improves the beam pattern. Which have been good on my stag can be H4 or H1

CPA (one of our parts suppliers - part of the Partslink group) list Valeo lights for the Stag, however there is no price shown. I will enquire.

                        Hi All

For your information I eventually found that that Chris Witor still has stock of the Cibies (Valeo) so a set was purchased and fitted together with Osram Bulbs. The road ahead is now bright

Autopal are OK, I have them on both the Stag and my Dolly Sprint, BUT there are 3 potential problems:

                          1. Fit. The little raised bumps around the edge are not consistently placed and sometimes need a bit of fettling to seat in the bowl correctly - this was the case on three out of the eight I had.

                          2. Longer term the reflectors do seem more prone to corrosion behind the silvering that more reputable makes.

                          3. The glass clouds over on the inside (thin white deposit) after a couple of years. I have had to remove to clean the ones on the Stag twice now - had them fitted for about 7 years - it does just wipe off, but it is a pain doing it as you have to remove them from the car and then manipulate a rag through the hole.

Other than that they are low cost (you get what you pay for) - currently 35 for a set of four with lamps delivered, and the beam pattern seems perfectly OK to me. They are also bright enough provided your wiring is up to scratch - (relays and separate earths).

I have Autopals on both my Stag and MGB, the quality does seem quite variable though.

The ones on the Stag I fitted around 7 years ago have good shiny reflectors, and work well with Osram Nightbreaker bulbs.

The ones on the MG have a much poorer finish to the reflectors and glass even when new, but are still a great improvement with decent bulbs compared to the original types.
