Ignition Light (red one) stays on when when I take the key out!!?

    Good morning all.
A strange one happened to me last night. As I pulled up after a run and turned off the Stag, the "red ignition light" stayed on, even if I take the key out? The car was fine while driving, no lights any where but as I turn it off, the red ignition light comes on? The alternator is only a year or two old and seems to be working fine according to the volt meter and red light on tick over? When I remove the wiring from the alternator though, the red light does go out. I decided to disconnect the battery and go for a cup of tea as it had just been one of those days. Need to get it put right today though, any thoughts please Guys, I'm not the best on electrics?
    Thank you

Could the Brown/Yellow exciter wire be shorting out somewhere?

sounds like one of the diodes in the alternator has given up, replacement needed

Thank you for your responses Gents.
I've just been back out to the car to see what else I can tell you.
Red light on before key goes in, on first position of turn red light still on, on second position ie ignition on no red light, final turn to start up and also no light.
Slow tick over or fast run no red light light.
Turned off car and took keys out red light back on. Unplugged just the small brown and yellow wire from alternator and red light goes off?
Hope this helps those of you knowing a tad more than me on electrics. Thank you

Oh, forgot to say that volt meter shows 12.5 - 13 volt constant.

          Thank you

Keep the battery disconnected until this is fixed - alternator faults can cause fires.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I had exactly this when a wire was connected up to the alternator that shouldn't be. Both of my Stags have a wire that looks like it should be connected but if you do it does this (on mine at least).
Auto transmission rebuilding since 1979 - for my sins!
