When my original bottle split I replaced it with a saloon one. The factory ones here in NZ do not have a reputation of a long life. The saloon one was much easier to obtain and is held in place with a neat little leather belt and buckle. Now being in place for over 20 years.

I lost 2 washer bottles to them falling onto the hot exhaust until I read about bending the bracket.
Now this one seems ok, but the top still doesn't tighten fully. Given up on that one.

I bent the little rod out a bit so it held tighter, will see if I can add a photo later

Just did some quick rough measuring of the new and old washer bottle, you will see from the photos why you end up bending your mounting bracket, the little clips that ride over the rod that is supposed to hold it in place have more acute shape which push the bracket from the undercut on the smaller fixing lug. The undercut has been heavily trimmed (not by me) the undercut is also shallower see photos.

If you waste you time like me and measure the 'T' thread dim on the bottles (largest part of the thread) the old one has a T of 86.22 the new one 85.28, if you then measure the 'E' the smallest measurement of the lid thread , mine was an average of 84.86. and take one from the other and divide by 2 . you will see that the old bottle has a tread engagement of 0.68mm per side where the new has 0.21mm 2/3rd's less

Note to self must get out more, and not buy crap

I've noted the same thing. With the aftermarket, original shape, bottle I have, the cap does not screw on properly. I also have a couple of original bottles and the cap screws onto those tightly. Unfortunately they aren't in such a nice condition as the newer one.

I've seen NOS bottles and washer pumps online (Land Rover), but the price.......

Thanks for all those comments and suggestions, I searched e-bay and randomly came up with this that was direct replacement
Austin Rover Leyland & Morris Kit Classic Car Windscreen Washer Pump #22B1
Bottle was fine, just the pump required
All fine now and MOT passed, happy days.

If anyone has an original washer pump and cap that is no longer pumping out the quantity or pressure it should to reach the top of the windscreen, then Julian Buckler can rebuild them - for members. He has recently overhauled one for me and it now pumps like new. He can be found on this forum as jbuckl, but be aware that he does have other things to do, so might not respond immediately. He has given me the OK to mention this service on here.

Does anyone have pictures of the original Mk2 (1976 build) bottle, motor, pipework in the engine bay as it would have left the factory? I'm confident that mine is an aftermarket ... and would like to bring it back into line.

                            Thanks M
