    washer bottle

Can anyone identify the washer bottle / pump that I have on my Stag.
It appears to be non standard per Rimmers pictures although it does use the original bracket mounted to the turret.

Any ideas appreciated as the pump has stopped working and I don't know what to replace it with.

    TIA

    John

It looks similar to 1.2 ltr bottles on Car Builder web site

Yes, I have one of these Wipac Universal 1.2L washer bottles fitted, available from eBay, CBS (WBOT), etc. works really well.

Mine has one of these and I believe it was standard when built in 1976.

I have a Rimmers bottle the E&T on the threads are small and the top overturns easily !

I think (!) it means that you can easily turn the threaded top past it's "natural" stopping place so it becomes loose again- i.e. skipping over the threads, or like a detent that doesn't, um, "tent".

The threads are under size, I also had to bend my bracket to get it to fit, the bracket mounting also had been heavily trimmed (flash) from the blow moulding process, the thread are small I expect because the neck blocks/plates on the mould have been skimmed to many times making the diameter smaller, and probably not round. my old bottom didn't have the same problem. will measure both bottles when i get time.

Make sure that the bottle is secure in the holding bracket. There have been many tales of the bottle coming loose and melting all over the exhaust manifold, with the associated fire risk.

My old one was fine until somebody leant on it at a show, and spilt the bottle on the mounting groove, it then leaked washer fluid over the electrical connection underneath, 2 jobs .

I bought one like that from Tony Hart at HRS, shows how long ago that was

My only issue with it is that the washer pipe is close to the exhaust manifold, it gets too hot and then falls off.

I do not believe that these type were ever standard factory fit

Looks like one I got 2nd hand off another Leyland car of the same period. I think my current one claimed to be for a mini, I think a previous one came from a Marina. They all fit the original mounting bracket - it must have been common across the Leyland range in the 70's.. I like them because I can never get the lid-mounted pumps to prime (I have tried quite a few old and new ones), and because they are used so little, they are always dry when you need the washers, and fail to prime again. With the pump at the bottom, it is always primed (until you run out of fluid). Much better design. Maybe the original was designed by the same team as the engine water pump - put it as high as possible ?
I have tried a few 'after-market' generic ones, but they always have their own brackets, and the bottle shapes do not fit the existing bracket.

That Wipac one looks very similar to mine - does anyone know if it fits the Stag bracket, without having to use its own bracket?

a simple cure for the non primed pump is to fit a one way valve and filter to the end of the pipe in the reservoir

Sure, and this worked fine for my 'daily drivers', but the Stag's screen washer might go unused for 6 to 9 months, and in that time, the engine bay has been hot for many hours. So, it tended to dry out the pipes around the pump. Hence my attraction to bottles which have the pump in the bottom.
