    Brake pipe flares.

Just had to replace the seals on the PWSA brake block assembly and thought I would re-flare the existing brake pipes but am unsure of the type of flare, male or female, can anyone advise please. Thought this would be a good idea as the flares have been tightened down for 20 odd years and I do not want to assemble it all just to find them leaking.

Perhaps you are being a bit pessimistic. If all the surfaces are clean there is no reason to suspect leaks when you put the pipes back. Why not try fitting them first, before buying the necessary tools. You would have to temporarily remove the pipes as well to do the job.

most good flaring tools need about 3 inches of straight pipe to grip when producing the flare.
if you are going to re flare, then why not replace with new cupronickel pipe as well.

Assembled pipes without flaring, as suggested by Lingen, and no leaks. Thanks for your replies.
