Problem with Strombergs

Hi, haven’t been on here for ages , as the Stag has been sat in the garage for a good few years . I have turned her over occasionally, but not started . Expecting to have fuel problems , I got the fuel pump working and cleaned out the tank and replaced all the carb petrol pipes and filters . I flushed the petrol through . On connecting up to the carbs I had fuel pouring out of the breather pipes , I pretty much expected this . Took the bottom of the carbs out valves were stuck solid . Cleaned up valves after ordering new , improved but not fixed. New ones fitted still had a dribble coming out . Found one air valve assembly was stuck cleaned it all up and the other side leak stopped. I’ve been told this is not the reason the leak stopped so I can only assume I got a bit more gunge out . My problem now is that after leaving the fuel lines in place and the carbs sitting on the manifold overnight I have a small amount of petrol setting in the manifold . This isn’t normal is it ? Are ther some other seals I need to replace , I have the choke compensator seals but not the carb spindle seal . Any one have any pointers at a loss at the moment, obviously don’t want to start her as she is . Many thanks.

Fuel in the manifold is usually leaking fuel valves, maybe some more gunge has affected the new ones?

Take the air valves out and look down to the jets with the fuel pump on and you should see which one is leaking.. just keep cleaning!

Thanks Terry , so normally nothing should go into the manifolds ? I can see that one side of the manifold is wetter than the other . So there are no seals which if replaced would solve this it’s just down to the valves ? Would it be safe to start her as this might push any crud through .

Basically the only way fuel can get there is up through the jet hole. Normally the fuel level is below that hole so as long as the floats are ok and the valves are ok it can’t get into the manifold.
there may be other small holes(choke) but all are above the fuel level.

In rare cases the floats leak and “sink” causing flooding or they can be set too high so that the fuel level is above the top of the jet.

you could put the fuel line into a container and let the pump do it’s thing, that will flush and you can check for crud, I’m told that a smart rap on the offending carb can shift grit as well!

either way I would go through that again before spending money!

Thanks Terry , you have put my mind at rest over the other seals . I will give them another clean up and see how we go . So am I right in thinking that if any other seals are bad it will just cause bad running . Many thanks again for your help .

Yup,
the choke seal would probably leak to the outside, or cause rich running, the air bypass and temp compensator would mess with mixture and idle speed. The throttle shaft would cause lean running as it leaks air..

seals on the choke. never seem them. some as had gaskets others not
