Well, the Original voltmeter is too far off but I have the "new" one I fixed. Got the original temp gauge to be close enough by removing the external resister. New fuel sender, and it is right within range, but the gauge reads between 1/4 and 3/4. If I go to the slightly smaller speedo and tach, it makes laying out the gauges in front of me easier instead of the one inch offset. Some "artist" made the gauges centered in the dash, not to the driver. Only other car I have ever seen like that was a Renault.

The steering column and wheel on the LH drive stags are not centered with the dashes as pointed out This is one pet peeve that has bugged me for years. Considering Triumph made LHD cars, not not sure why the they couldn't get this right. Terry, once u get your gauges in and the column on, you notice.Comment

Scored an NOS one, so it claims, off e-bay. It probably does not have the green filter, but I have one. I need to paint the inner rings on all of them anyway. I don't expect perfection, but it has to be close enough to be useable. Heck, even a 61 Bug gauge was highly accurate, just very inconvenient.
Failing that, I guess a repair shop or a new one from Smiths, but with the quality of the voltmeter, I prefer not to go that route. On the gauge reading only in the center, I am guessing the bi-metallic cracked. Usually they are just offset and that can be adjusted, this is limited range.
My Saabs all were dead on. 68, 74, 76, 79. Thinking back, the gauges in my Morgan and Spit were fine. My 65 B were all trashed so just went VDO. Half the gauges on my 74 BGT were bad. 67 Bug was fine, (Both gauges, really fancy. ) Volvo good, Several Hondas not accurate, but useable. None of my American car gauges were very good, though my 98 Sonoma is very close.
Yea, MIni in the center. Worse, the new ones were polarized so if you have sunglasses on, you can't see it anyway. Fuel gauge read 5 carrots when you were empty and the speedo read over 10 MPH fast at highway speeds. Sold mine before it self destructed. Plus I had modified it to be way too fast and fun for a street car and it was either going to kill me or put me in jail. I bought a much slower car, my GTI. Overall, it has been a superb car. Should have kept buying them when I sold my 79.
Just laid out on paper the new dash positioning. Shifting right an inch is about correct. Moving the clock to the glove box. Then will build a new warning cluster in an old Smiths case. Brining the upper outer gauges in another quarter inch. Small LEDs between the two center for L.R and Hi, with a bigger incandescent below for the alternator. Next step is to assemble the tools and materials to learn cold-forming and vacuum veneering. Everything will be in my field of view. I thought about building another warning cluster to go between the gauges behind a smoke panel like I did on my TVR, but it would mean spreading it out just enough to put the outside gauges behind the wheel. We just have too many lights.
Tomorrow is test fit a CS130. That is about the last of the under bonnet electrical repairs. Installed a main distro stud and have all brown leads crimped and soldered to ring lugs, not that abomination of corroded crimp and lose oversize fastons. Wondering how much better the heater and and wipers will work with a solid 14.7 V. Good enough I really hope!

Been there ... polarised glasses as well. I had a 76 Golf LS that at the time was way ahead of the rest of the 70's rubbish, I loved it, and the next one, a Scirocco. When I moved to USA the VW's were pretty sad so I went Honda. The 08 Mini Cooper-S I bought new (for the wife you understand) was a can of worms.. I had it in for warranty about 10 or more times mostly for the timing chain tensioner., Sounded like a diesel truck some mornings.. Finally they replaced the whole timing chain assembly and that was fixed but I never trusted it. Also the clutch made strange sounds.. so they "deglazed it" it smelled so bad of burned clutch I took it back to ask what they had done.. good move because a year later the clutch went including a cracked flywheel.. someone had "burned it up" they said.. Too right -- I showed them the service reports!! They reluctantly did it under warranty.. In the end it was fine for the 4 years post warranty but I never trusted it.. shame really. On the the Gti.. I love it just like the old 76, always stealing it from SWBO. Only dissapointment was the DSG box which was programmed for fuel consumption.. its a Gti who cares!! I had that recoded and its so much better.
Have you messed with the coding? I have the vagcom and have adjusted a few things.. interesting stuff..

My GTI (2011) has a little switch that reprograms the box and steering. The twin clutch trans is one of the things I like the best. It is better than I am so I never shift it manually. These days I drive more "touring" so look for pose rather than speed. Hence, the Stag. I have left the microcode stock. I keep thinking it is redundant as I have a Sonoma, B, and the Stag, but I get in and darn is it a great car. I kept trying to like the Volvo C30 better, but it's conventional automatic just spoiled it. I figure I'll have all the fun I want when I put a CB Black box in for my ignition and probably a Holly TBI. That should make the Stag delightful. Checking the docs so I can pre-wire while I am at it.
DHL just showed up, so new fuse block among other things.

Mines a 2016. The normal mode was annoying, it got to 5th gear at 30, the sport was banshee, neither were what I wanted. The recode gave gear changes where I felt I would do them, in sport it was calmed down a bit but still very sporty. $500 well spent.. the A4 I have is OK they seem to have learned how to do it now.
