My gut feeling is that you are seeking to kick off an argument, but for now I shall give you benefit of doubt with all the Lockdown Cabin Fever stuff going on.

I reiterate my above comment to behave yourselves else Webmasters Fresh Start policy may be executed

Your gut feeling is incorrect. If I wanted an argument, there would be no ambiguity in what I wrote whatsoever. I do not seek such, merely an explanation. Is that unacceptable here? And if you wish to rebuke me in some fashion is the normal route not to do that via a PM initially?

How about actually answering my very reasonable question? Why is it that some of the opinions posted on this thread (all made in a positive, helpful, and constructive fashion from what I can see, with no trace of poor forum conduct whatsoever) are somehow unacceptable to you?

Back to the topic of stabilizers
Most ss regulators just have a 3 terminal regulator in them. ( 7810 )THey can withstand an occasional short, but not good, The newer chips are even better but one ss one I bought actually had discrete components. How it could be cheaper I do not know, but the miracle of Chinese job shops. Of course, you can't blame a failure on an external condition. In my days in failure analysis, we found over 90% of component failures were external overstress. Everything from ESD to design faults. Notice the recommended application guide for these regulators includes several external components not included in the ones you buy.

If you could buy a new bi-metalic that was any good, it would be a different argument, but the SS ones came about as the replacements are just plain junk and have been since about 1980. A common problem with ss regulators is the poor grounding in our cars. THis can cause oscillations in the regulator or a DC offset, both leading to failures. I also note the ss ones do not have any heat sink and the tab is enclosed within the case. Not a good design. The ones I built I reversed the chip bonding it to the case for a heat sink. As I am busy, just bought one from Moss as my junk bin had no more 7810's in it. Another way one might DIY is just screw them to the gauge case, hard wire a jumper to the gauge input and pigtail power to the chip. One on each gauge that needs one.

Moderation have had 5 flagged posts from this thread alone. Believe it or not I have many things that I would rather be doing that dealing with spats from grown men on a forum about cars. But while you have my attention let us dissect your most recent posting

Ah, I assumed that because you chose not to PM me you would rather the response was in an open forum. You then had issue with that and chose again not to PM me but to post in an open forum. Does this answer your question?

To be frank, it didn't make any sense to me, I reread it several times but still remain blank. I did note that you chose to extract one sentence out of my original posting which when taken out of context of the rest of it led me to my gut feeling.

I refer you to my initial paragraph in this post.

I appears to me and a number of other members who flagged posts that Koy23 is not allowed an opinion, hence my warning shot

I reiterate, can you lot behave please?

              Hi Richard,

maybe these guidelines from the "For Sale" section could be generally applied - in particular the bit in block capitals. Up to you to see where this might have started off here.

By all means use the threads to ask questions to clarify the item itself, ask where it is, etc., or even to make offers.

Bad behaviour here would be to discuss the merits of the item concerned, to offer opinions on the asking price, or to propose alternatives to items for sale, and any such posts may be deleted.

Apologies Drew, I was not aware that SOC rules applied to eBay listings.

Pretty sure it wasn't an item a member was offering for sale though so this is a bit of a conflation of the facts Drew, very selectively done. I'm not sure it is seemly for the only remaining volunteer moderator to be given such a hard time in an open forum, especially by those who have either been sacked or withdrawn their services. Bit offside gents

                      Paul,

I think my message came across wrong. With "applied generally" I meant that, in future, those words could be made to apply to all sections - not just the "For Sale...".

Individual opinions of what's a shed and what's a bargain are often candidates to spark a "lively discussion". It's the old "why is guacomole so expensive when avocados are so cheap" argument!

Anyway, I'll now f-off* out of this one.

                      Drew

You’re right about your message Drew - over prescription of the rules though has helped the uk government into its current pickle
