I need to buy a new battery. I did a search and the latest post I can find is dated 2016. Any advice greatly received. I have a 55 amp alternator.

I fitted a Bosh S4 024 battery about 5 years ago, and am very pleased with it. It's rated at 60Ah. If it hasn't already been done to your car, it's worthwhile getting a battery with the pole positions reversed from the standard Stag layout, which takes the +ve cable away from its close proximity with the power steering pulley. This avoids potential unexpected fireworks displays and underwear changes

Generally speaking yes, the higher the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) the better - a higher rating will mean less voltage "sag" at the battery terminals whilst operating the starter which means more volts for the ignition and faster cranking, it is essentially related to the internal resistance of the battery and the battery capacity. BUT it is not simply a matter of comparing numbers - you also need to know what standard they are being measured to. Some of the common ones are SAE, EN, DIN, IEC, JIS. This can make a big difference. For example If the CCA is quoted as 390A CCA ( DIN) this is roughly equivalent to 625A CCA (SAE) - I believe EN gives similar numbers to the SAE figure. So when comparing the numbers on batteries make sure you are comparing like for like - check the standard to which the CCA was tested, usually quoted in brackets after the figure on the battery.
I have just looked at the specs for a Optima Red Top 072 battery and the one I looked at specified a CCA of 815A (EN) which is more than a Varta E24 (072) at 630A (EN). I have not seen a 072 battery with a CCA (EN) rating as low as 390A. The Optima Red Top was specified to be a AGM battery and was twice the price of a Varta.

I bought the Yuasa silver 030 from Halfords around christmas. It was competively priced at £98, still that price today. Comes with a 5 year warranty. The Yuasa silver is a top battery. It has the terminals reversed, i.e. the positive away from the power stering pulley. It fits fine. For the price.. very little to beat it

I had a Bosch S5 but it failed last year, gave the volts but delivered insufficient amps to even engage the starter solenoid. It was about 7 years old. I did replace it with another S5 though as I have used them with no problem on other cars.
I do carry a glove box ravpower jump starter pack. When the battery did fail I was 70 miles away from home on classic car drive it day. That little jump pack was used about 6 times during the day after engine stop to get going again, and I did over 200 miles in the day. It turned the engine over everytime just as fast as the lead acid battery. Amazing little thing!Mike.
