Water pump out, but not completely...

After removing the water pump the housing remained in the engine block, as only the impeller with the shaft came out.
How can I now remove the housing from the engine block ? I would like to check the condition and replace the gaskets underneath the water pump housing.

    Hi Dave

This is standard. I borrowed a slide hammer that had a bolt welded onto the end of it - slide the side of the bolt under the edge of the brass cage and with only two mild hits with the weight on the hammer it came out.

Check out Rimmer's video of the process, however this uses their proprietary slide hammer with a screw attachment and is used where the whole pump remains in the block:

Hans at Rimmer Bros describes the process of removing a Triumph Stag water pump and replacing with a Rimmer Bros upgraded 12 vane unit.Pump Specs:Top quality...

Other's have had a wretched time getting it out and have resorted to cutting...

      Hello Dave,
I recently went through a great deal of anguish in dealing with the various problems a Stag's water pump can throw at you. Many Stag owners will say they have never have any problems with the Stags pump (they are lucky) or can resolve without any serious consequences. In my case it was the opposite. Keep in mind some Stag owners, including a video shown by Rimmers I watched , find the brass cage just comes out with the pump - lucky them!
Anyway, as mentioned by Jeff, a slide hammer is a good bet. Except, in my case it didn't work. The slide hammer didn't shift it at all. I had to make up a special screw jack tool arrangement to get mine out. There was a commercially made one supplied by Tony Hart, but I don't think these are available now.
There is a lot more to know about Stag water pumps, so if you have any problems getting it back, as I did, let me know.

        Hi Dave

I used a slide hammer with expanding bushes for removing bearings, basically choose the largest bush that fits through the cage, expand it and the ridge on bush pulls from behind the cage.
I also used it to get the spindle bush out of the block.

          Hi Tony .
I’m confused now as being doing some research on this topic and found an old post of yours:

With many thanks I have borrowed kryten's cage removal tool and this has got it out. I did have to put quite a lot of weight on the 9/16" spanner to get it to move and feel this was the best way of dealing with the problem. In my case it would have needed a heavy duty slide hammer to have shifted it. Thanks to all who helped me with this.
Right, now to turn my attention to that seemingly seized pulley bolt!

Why did you have to make a tool, or have I misunderstood?

Hi Guys, thanks a lot for the suggestion (and for the discussion of course).
You mean a slide hammer like this could be suitable ?

              Hi Dave

I am not sure that would work. The issue would be how far down the lip of the cage is in the block and whether those claw-type attachments would reach before being prevented from moving by the top of the cage. This is why the one I borrowed only had a bolt on the end of the hammer so it could go down far enough. You may wish to try a different solution first unless you need that slide hammer and attachments.

Another wise forum member richardthestag posted this about how he got his out - again a slide hammer, but with an 'L' shaped attachment at the end, which would equal the bolt version I used.

That's basically the same set I used, these are some of the expandable bushes in the set.

                    Me back again Dave,
Yes, I forgot, I had problems before in 2015 removing the water pump, but on that occasion I did get the brass cage out with a borrowed slide hammer. Of course, there are slide hammers and slide hammers, but the one I used this last time (borrowed again, but from a different owner) probably did not have the weight of the previous one to deliver the necessary clout. I think the more expensive slide hammers have an assortment of hammer weights. I am now a fan of using the screw jack principle, rather than using a bigger hammer, be it 'slide', or otherwise!
However, my own real problems started when I was unable to get the water pump to correctly seat in the block on reassembly. Perhaps that's another story though!
                    Tony.

Still have that slide hammer, it has the weight and length to shift most things
