    Front grille screws

Hi I have an early Mk1. The mail cente front gille seems to be mounted by 4 normal pan head screws. Everywhere I look in parts suppliers they seem to say these are self tappers. Yet on my stag they are normal screws not self tappers.

Does anybody know the thread size of these screws and a supplier? I do not want to start screwing in self tappers into a perfectly goos thread unless I have to.

    You help is appreciated

    Dave

Did you see the note at the end - "Early shells use a Black Pozi Pan dog point UNF machine screw." If you send Peter at LD an email, I'm sure he'll be able to advise you.

the Mk1's had a metal boss fixing for the grille as i said i think 10/32 unf, the mk2 had the nylon square push fit fitting to acomadate the self tappers.

I bought asset of new screws from Rimmers as I wanted black finish, but got just ordinary self tappers in anodised finish, same as I have in my assortment box. Disappointed as they were not cheap plus post plus vat etc.

Peter at LD has the right ones.

I am from the pre metric era and there is no such fraction as 10/32. Must be 5/16 unless I am wrong?

It is a 10/32 UNF (Unified National Fine) thread. 32 tpi, diameter 3/16th inch diameter. It is not a fraction but the way small diameter unf & unc threads are specified. The first numer is the diameter the second the tpi.

Im pretty sure they are 5/16th UNF and screw directly into the little sockets for the MK1. The MK2 has nylon inserts, which use self tappers. Both solutions are as good as each other and the latter much have been a little cheaper. Get stainless of you can and LD are as good as any for that. Im pretty sure these will do the job, but I am going off memory as I now have a MKII. These are from LD part and also stainless, so suggest a call or email to them.

I think I managed to find them on the LD site, not in the grille section but in the plastic captive nut section further up, it then refers to a link where he has them... well hopefully.. I will let you know when they arrive.

Thanks for all your help... but as you will see from my next post, these screws are the least of my worries.
