You would need to take the hole door handle out of the door,theres two bolts that hold the handle to the door frame,you may need to lift the handle to get at the bolts,your also need to disconnect the lock rods,there held in place by two clips, lift the clips to pull the rods out of the lock
With the door handle on the bench,theres a E-clip thats holds the rod in place (the e-clip can be hard to find its at the back of the rod)

The ROM describes it pretty well. Did mine a month or so ago. Took a couple of hours but I changed the whole handle using the old mechanism. Your lift change should not be too bad. Longest part will be getting the doorcard off and back on.

The plastic door handle I have bought is totally useless
I striped out the door handle today and there is I bit that has to be taken off the old plastic lifter but it is rivited on with no way of removing it let alone fitting it to the new lifter

"Totally useless" you say. Well, they work on my car, and hundreds of owners have had them fitted. Exterior door handles were only ever sold by Triumph as a complete assembly, which is why the handle inserts were produced for repair purposes when the complete one became unavailable. The rivet can easily be cut off, and the roller refitted with a suitable nut and bolt, or even another rivet if you can obtain one.
