    Wiper motor

Hi, this my first Stag and and with a sluggish wiper motor particularly when the screen is dry, it's a little bit better when wet although don't feel confident that it could pack up at any moment. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions how it can be improved without exchanging it with for new one ? Is this normal behaviour, Answers on a postcard please.

I replaced the rack earlier in the year and turned the arm cams though 180 degrees at the same time which cured the jerky movement and clicking of the wipers but did not improve the speed of the wipers. I then had an exchange motor fitted and this made a vast difference to the speed of the wipers. So I would recommend getting a reconditioned motor fitted. The only issue I have now is that the intermittent wipe does not work which I suspect is the relay unit which I don't think is available any more.

I had slow wipers, although the motor seemed to work well when disconnected, and when I stripped the car for a rebuild I spent some time working at freeing the drive cable of the old grease used to 'lubricate' the drive. There was also a couple of dings in the outer sleeve which rubbed the drive cable causing some resistance. These I eased by minor manipulation, blowtorch heating and running the drive cable back and forward which improved things considerably.
I reassembled the rack without any grease, applying only a slight coating of 3 in 1 oil onto the drive cable.
My wipers now work well and will sweep a dry screen quite easily, although it is advised not to sweep on a dry screen.

Check the wiper wheel boxes turn freely, the old grease drys out and make them hard to turn, also take the top cover off the wiper motor same thing there the grease drys out making it harder to turn

A question of wipers to add to this one is that mine don’t park. They have one speed and if you turn them off they stop there and then on the screen. It’s no big deal but would like them to work properly if anyone knows the fix

Theres a white parking switch on the bottom of the wiper motor, they can brake, not sure if you can buy them on there own

Yes, mine do the same... its a two part problem. The wiper rack which is the moving wire mechanism that comes from the wipers themselves back to the motor, at the point where it enters the pointy bit of the motor has a right angled piece on the end. Or at least its meant to have.. mine does not. This is important as this right angled bit goes into a sliding block which slides back and forwards and at one end is a push button that the side block operates which causes them sto start in the right place... that is also missing on mine.

So if you do not have the:
                  • Right angled piece - get a new rack
                  • Sliding block - new motor
                  • Push button switch - new motor
They will not stop other than by the arm on the stering colum.

To correct you will need to fix the pieces that are wrong.

There are other causes such as broken spade connectors corroded pins etc.. but to check the 3 above simply take the lid off the motor and have a peek.

I am still living with my painfully slow, non parking wipers

My intermittent wasn't working, so I took the relay out and crimped the loose wire back into the place it had fallen out from. Now I have actual intermittent wipe rather than the Prince of darkness type.....

Does anyone know whether Mike Alan had any success with using a modern thermal delay that he was going to experiment with back in Jan 2019. My wipers stop dead straightaway when switched off and the intermittent is a series of twitches - almost as soon as the wipers start I can hear a click which I’m guessing is the delay cutting in too soon.

Tundra, sounds like your time delay relay is working ok. The column switches and the delay relay only need to "start" the wipers moving.Once they start to move the park circuit inside the wiper motor itself should keep them moving until they return to the park position. The time delay relay heats up and goes open circuit very quickly, thus only providing the pulse required to start the wipers moving.

Thanks Wisey, narrows things down to the switch in the wiper motor in that case.
