Does anyone have experience of rebuilding their standard strommies using a rebuild kit from Burlen? They are £126 inc vat for the pair and therefore a lot cheaper than the c £500 replacement options.
Thanks
Paul
Those kits are the bees knees and a couple of parts of a dog's anatomy too. I wouldn't go down any other route. You will find, however, that there are quite a few parts for other carbs which get left over. How about one of their gasket packs? I rebuilt my reconditioned carbs and am well pleased with the result
Burlen are a good company and supply good quality parts. My only caution would be if your carbs are really worn - we are talking slop in the throttle spindles and/or the piston assemblies and also the rest of the linkages. If there is wear then this will need to be addressed, simply replacing the parts (throttle spindle for example) may not/probably will not sort all the issues unless other work is done. I would also recommend a thorough read of some of the Stromberg rebuild threads/notes (use the forum search) to find out how to set up/check the temperature compensators. Also look at the correct (free) operation of the vent valves, these are often overlooked by reconditioners as they are difficult to get apart and clean up.

So many cars, so little time!
Thanks Stagdad. Mmm, nearly doubling in 8 years seems ahead of inflation to me too, but the opinion seems to be that it's worth it and a lot cheaper than recon replacements. I am meeting up with the mechanic I use (John at Old Forge Motors Harrogate - he's a genius so I'm happy to give him a plug!) and discussing Roger's points, above, with him before ordering.
BTW when you say you don't have carbs any more, I assume you have done something clever with fuel injection (in pots if so, no doubt)!
Made the mistake of aftermarket kit for some SUs. One jet was the wrong size and another fell apart. Burlen only! Will rebuild my CDs while evaluating the rest of the mill. Long term I think a Sniper is in order.

Paul, yes i have Efi now but still the stag V8. I had all the other carbs you can try before efi but the stroms were by far the best performers.
Thanks for the clarification Stagdad, sounds quite a departure to go EFI. Nice to know that you rate the Stroms though.
You might get a better bhp figure at some top end rpm with the other carbs on offer but for drivablity i did like the stroms but now i have fitted efi i love the extra flat torque curve and 50 bhp.
