    Tyres

    Morning,
I'm going to have my alloys refurbished.
The existing tyres are 10+ years old and I thought I would have them replaced
    What would you recommend?
    Thanks.
    Regards David

    Black ones........

Seriously, I am happy with my Vredestein Sport Classic 185/80HR14 tyres. My local tyre fitting company sourced them for me.

If you just doing normal social driving at legal speed limits then Uniroyal Rain Expert 3 are great and used by many Stags. About £50 each.

      No connection

What was the original size? 185HR14 or 175HR14. Later cars came on the 175HR14 which is better if you want to go lower profile ie 70 series 19570HR14. I bought Khumo in this size for about £60-00 each all in. Khumo is a good brand widely fitted by Hyundai and Kia.

          Thanks for your thoughts Dave.
Were you suggesting "Sprint" rather than "Sport" as I am struggling to "Sport" tyres?

Yes I'm into "normal social driving at legal speed limits"
What size/grade of tyres have you used?
            Thanks for your help.

              David,

175/80R14 88T . I will admit that they do not look as wide as the 185 but the road holding is very good. I have a couple of hundred yards of dirt road to negotiate with the car and the tyre is good at maintaining grip though slime and small stones.

When I had decided on the tyre I checked the prices on the internet, then I rang a local tyre shop and they quoted a lower price than the internet complete with fitting, I paid about £210 for five fully fitted etc.

I have Avon ZT7 185/70's on mine. Done about 2k on them this year, not noticed any issues. Speedo reads correct by GPS. My other Stag has Hancook 175/80's on it, not checked with GPS but it doesn't give the impression it is far out if at all. Price was very keen when I bought them I recall.

                  Yes, my mistake.

I got some tyres fitted to my Fiesta a couple of months ago and got a great deal from a company called Black Circles (Google them). Once you've decided which tyres you need then you buy them on-line and pay up front. You then have the choice of a variety of local tyre depots who fit them for you at a given appointment time. The beauty of this method is everything is included-balancing,new valves and old tyre disposal so no hidden extras. Two Avon tyres cost me £115 which was quite a bit cheaper than other quotes I'd had. I've no connection with this company but couldn't fault them. Hope this helps someone

I've also got the Avon ZT7 185/70 tyres.
I paid £300 including fitting, balancing and tubes for the wire wheels.
I'm pleased with them and they are very quiet

I use 175 RainExpert tyres too, they are excellent - and I do some driving ’against the clock’ too.

+1. My replacement 15" wheels came with cheap tyres that were rubbish, locking up at the slightest provocation when wet. They also locked easily up in the dry for those who don't take their cars out in the wet.
The car just stops with the Uniroyal Rain Experts.

                              Morning all,

What make/type of tyres is a bit like asking "how long is a piece of string?"......ha, ha, MANY answers to this one.
I had to have new tyres in Aug 2018, after finding out the tyres fitted (Goodyear Grand Prix G800 S) were 29, repeat 29 years old! Eeeek. (Made in Brasil, only 3 digits in the "age" box on the sidewall.)
In the end I settled for Continental 185/70R Eco Contact 5 88T's.
                              Why?
                              1. Unable at the time to get the 185/80 Hankooks which many users fit.
                              2. They were immediately available at Kwik Fit. Total cost for tyres/fitting/balancing/disposal and chrome valve stem covers came to £355. Budget for 10 years use and it's a reasonable price to pay.
                              3. They had a C rating for economy, B rating for wet weather grip and a noise rating of 70dB
                              4. Plus, at the time KFit were offering a £40 voucher if you bought 4.(Naturally this appealed to my Scottish senses - next stop Waitrose!)
                              5. A "quality brand" (My late brother always used their tyres on his BMW motorcycles.)

I use the car year-round, so invariably wet roads are involved. Therefore it is reassuring to know wet-weather grip should be good.
The Goodyears had a huge amount of tread depth left, no cracking or signs of deterioration.(But an overshoot on damp roads approaching a roundabout prompted me to closely check the date markings, and the age was confirmed following checks with the company in the UK who Goodyear now are.)
No matter how good the tyres looked, I had thoughts towards the repercussions of either having or being involved in an accident where tyre condition could possibly be considered a factor, so they had to be replaced ASAP. (Thinking insurance companies looking for excuses to wriggle out of payment and [more seriously] litigation regarding the road-worthiness of my vehicle, not something anyone wants to get involved in.)
Therefore I applaud your attitude to having your tyres replaced - it removes one stick for other people to beat you with.
Usually people have their "preferred brand", having had good experiences in the past, but the choices available nowadays are almost infinite. I guess I was influenced by availability, product reputation, the 70's were as close to the 80's as I could get, and …….some very nice Waitrose food !

                              Happy tyre shopping!

                              Neil.
