Before you start it again Terry, double check that nothing is fouling the fan blades, pulleys, belt or alternator fan. The metal pipe to the lower rad hose or one of the jubilee clips is a favourite for catching on the alternator fan. Failing that if the timing is off then it can make an engine sound like a bag of nails, as I recall you had not had chance to set it properly before your had to replace the VC. I assume you check the fan itself could be spun by hand with out fouling anything.

Hi Roger, thanks for your input, I intend checking things at the front of the engine before I start her up again.

In the morning (Xmas Eve), I will be busy setting up the (amplifier) equipment for tommorow evenings carol service then the dancing music that follows, and the misses will be baking about 150 sausage rolls to go with the free Sangria and mince pies.on offer later, togerher with the Party games always played in our Reception on Xmas Eve..

In the afternoon the engine man I mentioned in my previous post is coming round to help me try and get the Stag running smoothly again, and it would be a wonderful Xmas present if we could!.

Xmas goes on forever here, as the locals join in the British celebrations, but have January 5th as their main Xmas Eve event (3 Kings Day), which also happens to be our 46th Wedding Anniversary. January 6th is then a Bank Holiday as it is their equivalent of Xmas Day.

Keeping my fingers crossed can make some successful progress on the Stag tomorrow afternoon, otherwise I don't know what I will do next?

Just got an early Xmas present!, and it just goes to show the benefits of a 2nd pair of ears and eyes.

The "engine" man I mentioned before out here on holiday has just been round, and it look less than 5 minutes for him to diagnose the source of my new engine "clatter".

Started the car and it was making an unhealthy noise from somewhere around the front, and I thought my new VC was a dud, or I had done something seriously wrong when putting things back together again, but no this man pressed his hand hard down on the oil filler cap and the noise went away, it's the rh timing chain catching on the guard or something, so I need to remove the rh rocker cover and fix it.

Must have somehow got disturbed or the tensioner has moved the chain a little, but will find out another day as soon I have to get ready to fill my role as DJ for tonights music that begins with carols and mince pies, sausage rolls, and Sangria from 6.30pm, then games and dancing later in the large Castle Harbour Reception area.

Had to move the Distributor left and right at first to get it to start and run better, and will tighten it up later after sorting out the timing chain, then set to work on getting the carb mixture right, and putting back the breather pipe that comes from the PCV valve in the oil catch tank.

Still have a small water leak from the front left side Inlet Manifold gasket, but hopefully will be able to fix that without removing the whoe manifold again, but no sign of any oil leak so far- but it is early days, and need to take the car on a good run to find out for sure - which probably won't be till the start of the New Year.

Can relax and enjoy myself tonight and tomorrow and when my son and 2 of our grandchildren come out on the 27th, and can now go to sleep at night without worrying about the Stag anymore, assuming that the timing chain "rattle" is just that it is catching, which it must be if pressing down on the oil filler stops it.

Have a good Xmas everyone, I will certainly be having a few beers later on in the evening, and maybe some whisky or brandy also.
Tomorrow's Xmas lunch is pre-booked at a nearby Eatery with friends, so the misses has no cooking to do, but she will first be dressed as an Elf helping Santa dish out presents to the children at the Poolside from 11am onwards. Forecast temperature for tomorrow is 28 degrees Celsius.
        Feliz Navidad.

Not been able to do any more work on the Stag as have had family (son + 2 grandaughters) over for a few days, but they fly back to the U.K. later today. What I have done though is made a list of things I need to do next on the car which includes :-
          • Check inlet manifold coolant leak now cured, and the noise from the "catching" timing chain fixed,
          • If o.k. set timing, mark on dizzy, and tighten dizzy bolts,
          • Replace Air filter assembly & run engine for a while and check for any remaining oil or coolant leaks,
          • Set carb mixture & idle screws on Weber,
          • Replace front grill,
          • Consider changing the plugs for a new set,
          • Consider putting on a pair of front seat covers I have, as current seats worn and torn in places,
          • Sort out what tools to keep permanently in boot, and tidy boot up,
          • Get new ITV (MOT) windscreen sticker (current one expires 31/12/19),
          • Go on a good long run to test everything is now o.k.
Depending on how much I have to drink tonight and how I feel in the morning, might postpone doing any of the above till later in the week.
There is always a big firework display here in Los Cristianos at midnight to celebrate the New Year, and intend watching it, and a local Bar with a great viewpoint of it all is putting on food and cocktails from 10 minutes to Midnight onwards, as well as a "Draw" to win a decent money prize.

          Happy New Year everyone.

Cheers Mike, still got an unhealthy noise from the rh timing chain area which needs sorting.
The good news is that the mechanic who I used to trust with my Stag is back on Tenerife on the 9th of January, and he is going to call round to help me sort out my remaining problems (I hope!).

The misses has a blood test at the local Hospital tomorrow morning, and I have one on the 7th of January prior to us both seeing Hospital Specialists later in the month.

Currently parked next to my Stag is a rh drive Range Rover with major water leak problems, so I am not alone in having car problems in our Complex. The same mechanic is going to try and get both cars running again when he is back.

Just a quick update - not touched the Stag so far in the New Year as Celebrations here are still ongoing and don't finish till the 7th of January.
Will then wait till the 9th when the mechanic I used to trust with my Stag to do work that I couldn't returns to Tenerife and is going to call round.

Tomorrow night the 3 Kings on Camels ride through the streets of Los Cristianos throwing sweets to the children, and it is also our 46th Wedding Anniversary, so will be out celebrating.

The day after (the 6th) is 3 Kings Day itself and the locals equivalent of Xmas Day when parents give their children presents, and it's also yet another Bank Holiday. Will be glad when it's all over so can take a rest for a couple of days prior to tackling the Stag again.

Seems to me that there is too much celebrating going on in Tenerife and not enough work being done on the Stag! You really must stop the good life and get on with the Stag, life is too short.

That's why we emigrated here in 2004, and having so much fun does take it's toll, and my Stag doesn't always get the full attention it deserves!

I agree with you life is too short, which is why we try to get as much out of it as we can whilst we are here and are fit enough to do so.

Our Fridge is still full of good food and wine left over from Xmas, so the Stag will have to wait until it's all gone!

Nothing like starting a nice sunny January 46th Wedding Anniversary morning off with a bottle of Bollinger Champagne and a Cake with friends in our Complex Bar. Everyone was happy except for my poor Stag which is minus it's RH rocker cover in an attempt to find where the noise around there is coming from.

Watched a long and very good 3 Kings parade last night (similar to a Carnival procession, pics below), then enjoyed a nice Anniversary meal with friends, and the Restaurant owner who we know well put 2 free bottles of Cava on our table at the end, having already drunk several pints of beer beforehand, and the misses numerous glasses of Sangia, so both us only got up at lunchtime today, and I didn't feel up to doing anything on the Stag, even though our next door neighbour offered to help in diagnoseing my mysterious sound from around the rh timing chain area.

Did check though when I last changed the timing chains, which was back in 1998 and aproximately 22,000 miles ago, and I did also check and adjust them later in 2005 (about 17,000 miles ago) when I last suffered a Head Gasket failure.

Only a couple of days until the mechanic I mentioned previously is back on the Island and due to call round, so decided I will wait until then before doing anything else on the car, especially as have a Hospital blood test early tomorrow morning, and on Wednesday/Thursday been asked to disconnect and remove all the electric cables I personally put up in the Grounds and Gardens on Dec 1st to power the Xmas Tree and other Xmas lighting displays and effects, and also help take down the decorations in the Reception area, and of course also in our own home.

In the combo below (the last pic - bottom right) I am 3rd one in on the left, and the misses is opposite me - 3rd one in on the right, taken in one of our favourite steak restaurants in town. I just hope that the day the mechanic and I get together on the Stag, is as good a day as I enjoyed yesterday when everything went exactly to plan and was thoroughly enjoyable. I know this Thread is concerned with the Stag, but I hope you don't mind me slipping in a post or two that is partly off subject when the car is not 1st prioirity.

Couple of reasons why I have not made a post in a while.
My Internet has been down, but today the company I use installed a new router as the the previous one developed a problem.

The mechanic I was waiting for got delayed and has only just arrived back on the Island.
He will be calling round Thursday afternoon to help me diagnose my current Stag problems.
Today he has been working on the Range Rover parked next to me, which apparently has a siezed thermostat.

Hoping for good news on Thursday, as at lunchtime have a Hospital appointment to review my Polymialgia status and what a recent blood test shows, and in the afternoon hope that the news on my Stag is better than I expect (that at least my timing chains are O.K.).

A couple of "tests" undertaken today - me at the Hospital around lunchtime, and my Stag being tested by myself and a mechanic friend around tea time.

The Rheumatologist at the Hospital says I need to keep taking the steroids I am on for my Polymialgia, and my Cholesterol levels are a bit high, and she (the rheumatologist) is referring me to a Neurologist for tests because of a lot of headaches that I have been getting lately. Didn't want to tell her that one cause of the current headaches could be my Stag!

When the mechanic friend I have been waiting for finally turned up at about 6.30pm, after a few attempts we finally got the car started (with the rh rocker cover off), but blow me if now the unhealthy noise I was previously getting has dissappeared and the engine was ticking over pretty well and quietly despite the absence of the rocker cover and air filter and the distributor being loose awaiting the timing to be set, and the carb mixture also requiring re-setting.

The mechanic is driving a van back to the U.K. tomorrow, then flying back again when he will call round once more, and imbetween time I am going to put everything back together again on the engine, and hopefully take the car on a run. What little I had done since last switching on the engine was to move the metal water pipe that goes to the bottom of the radiator further away from the Alternator as it could have been catching causing the noise I was talking about, which seems to be bourne out by the fact that the "rattling" noise has now gone?.

The mechanic and I both agreed that the rh timing chain at least appears pretty tight, and as there is no longer any noise coming from around there, I am not going to have to take the timing chain cover off, which would mean also removing the fan and crank bolt all over again. Think I will sleep a little better tonight.

This is posted on the forum. As I do not agree with the diversion from your stag problems to a general blog of your life and times in Tenerife.
There is a separate section of this site for such posts. I do hope you read that section.
