    Steering column reach adjustment

OK, I've searched and read several of the threads about steering column issues, but I haven't found a simple description of how to carry out the fore-and-aft adjustment.
Mine goes up and down OK, but there is no movement in and out. Are they both supposed to work with the single clamp lever, or is there a separate clamp for the in-out adjustment?
Or do the splines tend to seize up?

Long time since I last adjusted as I'm the only driver, but am sure both in/ out and up/ down are both on the same lever, so I'd agree with your suggestion that the splines are a bit seized. Hopefully, someone who's had similar experience will be along shortly.

    Hope you're enjoying your Stag.

Hi ceejay ,it would appear your column is seized for in and out movement ,most probably going to be a strip down of your column with dw40 involved. Regards Graham

The column consists of concentric tubes separated by plastic bushes. See Repair Operations Manual Section 57.40.16.

Maybe worth trying to get some lubricant down between the tubes and persevering with pulling/pushing on the wheel.

Ceejay. Perhaps you aren't pulling hard enough! The adjustment is a bit stiffer than on cars today, but I think it is unlikely that it has seized unless it has got wet somehow.

I have the same issue. No steering reach adjustment.
Can someone that has had the steering column apart or has one currently apart suggest we need to direct lubricant to get to these splines w/o disassembly.
Appreciate any photos, thanks in advance.
              Cheers

Brian - I found the reason for my problem. Obviously at some point the bushes between the inner and outer tubes had worn, so that PO had fitted a clamp to the outer tube, braced to the upper dash area, then wound duct tape round the inner tube, pushed the two together, then clamped it all up. It worked to eliminate column play, but also eliminated reach adjustment. What a bodge!
Pending stripping the whole thing to rebuild properly, I found a PVC bottle with wall thickness perfect to fit between the inner and outer tubes, I cut a long section of this and slid it up between the two, then taped it to the inner tube at the lower end. I could then remove the added clamp and had a reasonable amount of reach adjustment.
Also a bodge, I know, but at least it's an improvement over what was there!
When I removed the original duct tape, I also squirted WD40 up the tube and I think this also helped in freeing things.
                Good luck!
                Chris

Amazing what you find some PO did! Mine broke free with just a tug. I wish it had about another inch of travel, but not too bad.

WD-40 is not always the best answer. It turns to gum over time. it works very well for Water Displacement. Good at getting sticky labels off. Not good as a lubricant or penetrate. I use PB Blaster, but more out of habit than it working any better than others. I have seen some reasonably objective tests that suggest none are really much good.

Ceejay- Thanks for your reply, after many months finally I bit the bullet and removed the steering column from the car.
The inner and outer tube has a plastic wear strip located in the 2 x holes of the outer tube.
These had managed to bind the inner and outer tubes together with surface corrosion and disintegrated when put under some force on the bench, a small steel shim also fell out.
So, will be looking for suitable PVC bottle to adapt unless any other suggestions, as the wear bushes don’t appear in the parts book.
                    Thank you for your response.

                      Brian,

These are probably what you need:

I've searched this topic because on re-attaching my steering column to the newly-installed fascia I find that its fore-and-aft adjustment is jammed. Indeed it seems to be well and truly jammed, so I figure it needs to be dismantled and cleaned and new bushes fitted, rather than just giving it a hard tug. Trouble is, the very nature of its jammed-ness makes dismantling problematic.... I have removed the column and am trying to proceed per 57.40.06 in the ROM - have removed the csk screw and need to slide the lower tube upwards to expose the circlip. But it won't budge - my attempts to persuade it using a hammer and piece of 4x2 have moved it only about 1mm. Can anybody offer any guidance as to how violent I can/should get in order to try and move it? I expect that somebody else has encountered this situation previously?

                        Thanks in advance - Dave

from memory the issue with mine was the plastic bushes had seized up between the inner and outer tube.
I suggest you could try a little gentle heat to soften, possible a hot air gun.
Once I got mine to move all the pieces came tumbling out.
Replaced the bushes with plastic strip made from out anchor milk bottles as deejay, works well now

Thanks Brian - I have a heat gun so will give it a crack and see how I go.

The correct bushes have a pimple cast into them to make sure they stay located in the correct places. Anything without this feature may move up or down between the tubes and not provide the correct stability. As the correct parts are available, it seems pointless to use something else, but I do see that you are based in the Antipodes, so sometimes have to compromise.

I bought mine from LD Parts as per the link in post 11 above.
