Needless to say, this item has gone on to the growing pile of things which won't get put back on the car....

'Evaporator' and 'magnetic clutch' sound like maybe they're part of an air-con system?

Well my first appraisal was completely wrong, I think that is the control box for an air-conditioning compressor clutch.
The blue wire controls the air-con compressor clutch (on/off).
The white wire linked to the -ve side of the coil samples the engine RPM.
The potentiometer sets the RPM level for when the clutch kicks-in.
As the blue wire is not connected to anything, I assume you do not have air conditioning fitted, or if you do, it does not work.

Yea, that figures - maybe an after-market setup that was installed at some stage, though this would be all that remains of it now. Perhaps a/c or a cooler box for some Aussie bloke's stubbies..

Looks like an extra cooling fan.....or an A/c unit

Davo1850, that's an air conditioning part that looks like it has been retrofitted.
I think it was described in its day as an 'idle cut off switch'. Usually fitted in smaller engines which did not have the ability to drive the compressor (whilst the car was in 'Drive') at idle without stalling or dropping too low in revs to keep the AC cycle working. You could adjust the switch for the compressor to 'cut off' at a certain idle. Once you drove off/revs increased it would then reconnect the compressor clutch.
Probably still a good idea to use if you are going to run an A/C unit with condenser fans etc etc etc. Off course you feel the change in cabin temperature it if you are idling for a long time in a very hot day.
Not sure if the well designed factory integrated air conditioning unit had a similar adjustable relay fitted? May not have been around in 1970? Or maybe the TV8 had enough power at idle?
