Swopping gearbox from a-type to J-type

hi, I have a mk1 stag which has an a-type overdrive, which is past its best, I have seen advertised a reconditioned gearbox with J-type overdrive, my question is will it fit in to my car? I’m pretty sure the gearbox will (is there a difference??) but will the overdrive fit and work? Or should I just get my current setup reconditioned??

    any advice appreciated.

    It should just bolt on

Thanks for the reply. Are the electrical connections the same?

I think the propshafts are the same, however the mountings are different looking at Rimmers website, and the bits are not cheap

is it actually reconditioned (rather than gunked off and painted) and if so by someone who knows what they are doing?

What is wrong with the current a-type setup?

Why is that? The length or the flange? Could I use the gearbox flange from the type a if it was the flange size?

Sorry I missed a few replies. The gearbox has been properly rebuilt so I’m told. The problem with the current gearbox is that it is difficult to engage some gears especially reverse, the overdrive does not work because I think there is a plate missing off if the side just by the solenoid, under it you can see the parts that move in and out, I have no idea where the cover plate is as I brought the car as a restoration, I’ve only just noticed it is not there whilst looking at the type of overdrive fitted. I don’t really want to go to too much expense on trying to get the gearbox to fit, I may be cheaper in the long run to get a type A reconditioned unit?

A type overdrives are worth lots ££ in the TR market where they are now getting to be unobtainable, You might have turned your back on it but there is gold in them thar hills.

The flanges on both gearboxes are the same, as I said your need to chance the gearbox mounting bracket that holds the rear of gearbox to the car

Your old gearbox whatever condition is still worth £500 to the trade

Don’t forget the exhaust down pipes, j type are listed as different, I think they drop or maybe curve more than the Atype/non OD one.

Sounds like your clutch is dragging if you are having difficulty engaging gears.
Make sure the system is properly bled which cannot be done with the slave cylinder bolted in place. You need to remove the mounting bolts and twist the cylinder so the bleed screw is on the top before bleeding then re-fixing.
The missing plate is just a cover. Make sure the operating lever on the overdrive is making its full travel, it is covered in the Haynes manual.

I have had problems with A type solenoids in the past where the internal electrical contacts have corroded. The solenoid has a pull in coil and a holding coil. The contacts provide the current for the pull in coil and if dirty the mechanism will not move the linkage far enough to engage the overdrive. Remove the end cap from the solenoid and clean up the contact points.

This lot will take a couple of hours and cost nothing and may solve your problems.

I would stick with your A type rather than risk an unknown item that may be no better than your own. If you have concerns then discuss with overdrive services in Sheffield ( I have no connection) but they are an honest company and do excellent work and are happy to talk over your problem on the phone.

Overdrive Repair Services started in 1986 taking over from Laycock Engineering providing everything from the smallest spare part to the full Overdrive Unit.

Be wary of exchanging your box A to J without being aware just how much an A box and overdrive is worth, far more than a J box & overdrive.
