    Mk1 Alternator upgrade

Hi all, I have a Mk1 with an original alternator setup but I would like to upgrade to a more modern type. I do not wish to loose the original look of the control box etc but please could you point me in the right direction as to which one to buy and what to do with wiring and such.
I would still like to have my voltmeter working if possible.

I am hoping I can just buy a mk11 and all will be well, In the perfect world things are not normally that simple.
    Thanks all.

Hi all, I have found and screenshotted, if that is even a word, an old post from tonyh. It lists everything needed and how to do the wiring. Thank you tonyh and soc I think I have a fighting chance now.

you can use any of the acr range of alternators with the internal regulator pack.
at your old regulator pack, remove the 2 ind indicator wires and join them, the same with the 2 bat + - wires. all should work then.

Hi Phil S, thank you for your response. I am not sure yet which way to do the wiring. It seems there is more than one correct way, I would like to leave both my control boxes in place with wires but only for looks, maybe this will change when I do get around to it.

Hi sujitroy, I'm no better at forum type stuff than I am at wiring and general car repairs. I Googled Triumph stag alternator conversion and scrolled down a little to find some soc links, the top one dated 11 Oct 2016 said Alternator change Mk1 to Mk2. I then found the post from tonyh. I hope you can find it from this info. Good luck.

            hi desmk11
if you pull the spade connectors off the control box they can be joined to look like they are still connected or remove the guts of the control box and join the terminals inside, but any body who knows stags will recognize the later alternator, go the whole hog and run the 2 wires straight to the alternator

Looking to change a Mk1 alternator to a more powerful Mk2 one and have been looking for any wiring instructions. I spotted the desmk11 article from Mar 2015 “Hi all, I have found and screenshotted, if that is even a word, an old post from tonyh. It lists everything needed and how to do the wiring. Thank you tonyh and soc I think I have a fighting chance now. Des.” but have not been able to locate the reference screenshot. All assistance welcomed.

In this YouTube Video, I walk through the steps on what wires go where from a Mk1 setup to a Mk2 set. Someone got back to me and confirmed it work for them.
