    electronic ignition

    Good morning all,
Yesterday I got rid of my Lumenition, as it proved to cause problems when moving slowly - e.g. when manouvering into or out of the garage.I had used the „Lumenition Optronic“ Typ: PMA50, with fitting kit: FK113 for a Lucas 35D8 distributor („anticlockwise“).
I replaced it by a Pertronix Ignitor II (9LU-181A) with a Flamethrower II coil (inner resistance 0,6 Ohm) without a series resistor and with „Suppression“ carbon fibre HT leads.
When driving I have the feeling that the engine follows the accelerator more qucikly and willingly. The engine seems to run cooler, too. The needle, even when on the "Autobahn", creeps up to the letter "E" in "TEMP" only. Ambient temperatures are not very high yet, however.
    Best regards,
    Dieter - from Germany.

    Hi Dieter

I fitted a Pertronix ignition system a couple of years back and all good until my cheap 6v coil failed taking the ignitor with it. I replaced the ignitor and fitted a 12v Flame Thrower coil and like you I feel the engine is stronger than before. The acceleration is instant and powerful and idles smoothly at 5K. I am a happy bunny.

5000 r.p.m. is quite a high idle speed

      The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

Also a great fan of the pertronix and flame thrower setup. Much better pickup from idle and smoother throughout the rev range. (compared to a tired piranha p8 setup)

Have found that my car runs slightly hotter after prolonged running at 3k rpm than it does at 3500rpm. Not dangerously so but still.

Not the cheapest but so far more reliable and smoother. (compared to a cheapo offering)

Also running LDPart 7mm HT leads, distributordoctor cap and rotor

        very happy with it.

        Richard

I've done it again, mph instead of mpg and now 5k when of course I meant 500, still you knew what I meant Brew, there I go again always get by b & d .mixed up!
on a more serious note, Stella Stag failed her MOT yesterday, front wheel bearings dangerously loose. Just goes to show the importance of having a independent safety test, I thought she would fly through, but missed that one.
          Cheers

Hi Dieter, I’ve had a Petronix ignitor with a flamethrower coil for about 10 years, second best mod I’ve done to the Stag. Hope it gives you plenty of trouble free miles ( or Kilometers in your case)

              Hi Dieter

I've just bought the Pertronix Ignitor II (9LU-181A) with a Flamethrower II coil (inner resistance 0,6 Ohm) waiting for it to arrive, I'm replacing an old Newtronic Piranha unit.
Please could you give me some advice on wiring it .
I have about 5 white wires to + side of coil 2 in one spade connector, 3 in another. the connector with 2 wires is giving 12v with ignition on nothing on the other connector. When I connect the 12v cable to the coil the terminal is showing 6v.
The negative side of the coil has one cable that appears to go to fusebox area ???? ( no voltage on it)

Basically what I'm asking is which wires do I disconnect / connect / add, to get it working.

              Thanks
              Steve

Thank you Richard, It helps to see the actual items, I don't have the ballast resistor as per the video, mine has the ballast wire, I believe the white/pink wire has to be disconnected, not sure what else though.

                  Thanks again

Hi guys, For those of you with the Pertronix and Flamethrower 2, can I ask what plugs and what plug gaps you go with? Also any changes to mixture needed? Many thanks.

                      Hello all,
When you fit a Pertronics ignition, make sure your leads are of the "supression" type.
                      Good luck!

                        three questions.
                        Mr SGN first
                        • isolate the pink/white wire. Take a new feed from any white wire under the dash. Lucas white = ignition controlled unfused. which means that coil is energised when you turn on the ignition and off when you switch off. Don't use scotch connectors.
                        • Leave the feed from the starter solenoid in place.
                        • On the negative side of the coil you should have a wire to the tacho, leave that also
                        Mr Mod2j
standards plugs and gaps. adjusted the ignition timing be ear to get that sweet spot, it will depend on your engine but most likely between 12 and 14 btdc

                        Dieter
and 7mm diameter to avoid the leads being pinched by the clips
LDParts sells them, sure others do to

Thanks richardthestag, it's starting to make sense, It looks as though my white/pink wire is joined with yellow wire in one connector , I'll just separate the white and pink from it and leave the yellow connected.
Also could I take the new ignition feed from the inertia switch ?

                          Thanks again

Thank you richardthestag! I am sure I had read somewhere to set the gap to 28 or 30 thou. But if standard 25 thou works, I will go with that, thanks.

Probably on LD part website (sports coil) I run my 12v flamethrower and Pertronix setup with plug gaps at 35 thou and it runs nicely. Timing ended up at 15 degrees for best running.
