    ALTERNATOR WIRING CONNECTION

    Hi
Does anybody know where this wire goes on the alternator (17ACR) the plug seems fairly a straightforward fit but there does'nt seem to be a spade on the back for the spare brown wire, is a connector missing from my alternator?

As far as I know the 17acr only has 3 connections on it 2 large spade (output from alt) and 1 small connection (waring light/excitation power on start up)

Is the extra brown cableLIVE? if so is it switched live or permanent live.

You may find that is now a spare wire. The original alternator had a connection for 'electrical sensing' but the current exchange alternators appear to be 'mechanical sensing' and don't require the fourth connection. Mine is the same, the wire is redundant.

Incidently you should have an 18ACR not the lower output 17ACR alternator!

      Cheers,

      Mike.

If you are desperate to put it somewhere solder it to on of the large brown wires at the terminal block- as was stated by Mike, some alternators were battery-sensed and required that wire, but the majority available now are machine-sensed which don't need it because as the name implies, the alternator detects and sets it's output voltage internally - that wire dependant on the makeormodel of vehicle either would have been connected to the starter motor main battery lead, orother effectivelydirect connection to the battery +ve terminal.

Yes, but aren't theirsrefurbished ones on an exchange basis? Ldpart sell new ones. He is also a well-known SOC member and provides brilliant service.

Personally I would get mine from my local Lucas agent, but then he is a long-time enthusiastic Stag owner, well known to the SOC.

Thanks guys, does a new alternator bought outright from a Lucas Agent come with the fan and pulley, if not will the parts from the 17acr alternator fit ?

The one I got from JP was sold as new (but with £10 back on the old one, not worth posting it!)

It came with fan and pulley, which I needed, and cost £70 including P+P

Nothing against LD! BTW my alternator came next working day.

I went to my local lucas agent firstand the price was about £64 from memory, but no fan and pulley
