Got one

Hello all

Well I got my Stag at last. Looked at so many that were real dogs body wise Isopon
P40 must be doing well.

I still had to travel far to fetch it - in Wales. I have to tell you the night before picking it up was the worst night ever! I kept on thinking about what has happened to claral and all of the horrid stories of things that could go wrong!

The car was put up for sale by the wife who’s husband had gone off to work in China, it has had a ground up restoration and bills for every nut and bolt. She decided to put it up as he won’t be coming back. The car was unused for 4 years, covered with a plastic dust sheet which was stuck to the body! This has messed up the paint a bit but still all good.

Her local garage got it going and gave it an MOT, the car was valued at 7K, double what I had in mind be we came to deal, as I told her the car needed work, the Carbs are all over the place, the piston in one has no oil so it’s not running too well.

I have to say the drive back to London was a joy - even with the hard top on. My eyes were glued to that temperature gauge - it didn’t reach over half way 250 miles later!!

When I hit London, 8 miles from my house, it all went wrong! Sitting in a traffic
Jam that wasn’t moving at all - two red lights illuminated on the dash, one of them indicating oil - that was it, I turned off at the nearest petrol station and switched the engine off and checked the oil. It was fine but very thin; the car would not start after that! No over heating problems, it just won’t fire, I called the AA, they said they’d be there in 2 hours…after one hour I got fed up of waiting and rang the woman who I brought the car from.

She told me to plant my foot on the gas while turning it over and it will start.
It did start, so I cancelled the AA and drove home, the carbs are knackered but I knew this before I brought it! The car is very clean and well looked after with a massive
History not changed hands since 1985.

Welcome to the world of Stag ownership. Apart from the 'non-starting' issue it sounds promising. If the car didn't overheat in 250 miles, then that should be a a good omen.

With no oil in one dashpot, and the common hot starting problem it sounds as if a proper carb overhaul should do it wonders. There is an o-ring in the bottom of each dashpot piston and these eventually dry out/perish. Replacement is a bit of a pain, but will improve running no end.

The oil warning light may, or may not, indicate a problem. I would change the oil and filter, and also the oil pressure switch. This is on top of the oil transfer housing on the driver's side of the engine. These can go off. Replacement is a bit fiddly due to confined space, but they are cheap (http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.ph...f6a819086443d6)

Most owners fit an oil pressure gauge. This requires a T-piece in place of the switch, with the switch fitted to one branch of the t-piece, the gauge to the other branch.

Good luck, and enjoy it in the 'Indian Summer' the Met Office say we are going to have .

You certainly know your stuff Dave. I was told by the owner that her husband said that
the o rings in 1 dash pot needed replacing; I wasgiving a bag with them in.
The LUMINITION has failed so it has points fitted I have a computerised
Ignition which was fitted to my CJ7 V8 jeep, cost me ÂŁ400 pounds I took it out before I sold it. made starting my jeep a and running it a joy
Would it fit? See picture

I have never heard of this system, let alone seen one on a Stag. They have a web site: http://www.jacobselectronics.com/

It looks like they tend to cater for modern engines. May be worth contacting them for advice.

By modern standards that's a bit 'Heath Robinson' :? . I'm not sure I'd want to connect that to my ageing ignition circuit. For a neat, reliable fit & forget solution, have a look at the recent 'Rev Counter Wavering' thread for info on an alternative - ignore the advice on needing a new coil, not necessary.

hi, a question to virgin26, so after you got the stag home and knowing that the lights came on, was there anything wrong with the car at all? or was the lights just coming on for no good reason?

So far it’s been ok, but I have not been very far with the car since I got it.
It has carb trouble. I will book it in with M&G motors for a good going over
if it comes to the worst and the engine knackered, I will pull it out and put in
3.9 efi which I have. I was planning on going down this route one day.

This car has had major money spent on it including an engine rebuild in the last 5000 miles. If they are that fragile that they need so much pampering and still go wrong
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Stag, and the engine, but I need it to be reliable. Take today for instance. I went out in my other car, which is a Lexus. I got stuck in a traffic jam, if that was the Stag, I would be crapping myself, thinking what is going to go wrong now.
