Mk2 Door lock - is this normal?

Sorting out a couple of problem on new stag. I knew the lock was a problem when i bought it but thought "that won't take too long", how wrong can you be!
Passenger lock works fine unless you try to lock it with the key. Lock it with the key and then try to unlock it and you cannot open it from either inside or outside.
Managed to get the door card off and opened then stripped out lock. it works fine with the outer handle assy removed but refit the handle and the problem returns.

This type is not shown in either the Factory ROM or the Haynes Manuals. My question is with the key position unchanged should the 'claw lever' that engages with the rod coming from the lock mech have the 90 deg of free movement shown in the pics below or have I got a problem with the lock itself? The condition looks bad as it is smothered with Waxoyl or similar and the mech is in good condition under the crud.

Anyone have a lock out that can confirm this amount of free movement is normal? - Alan

      Hi Alan

I fitted two new ones a few weeks ago, and they had the same free play as your photo shows.

      Cheers

Mine have lots of free play as well. Passenger side has been rebuilt and feels like a new one, drivers side still feels like I could open it with a lolly stick.

I have both a mk1 and mk2 handle in the garage, don't ask, and they both have the play that is talked about. Fitted a mk2 handle to, you guessed it, mk2 car with the free play and all works fine.

Thanks everyone, so it seems the free play is the norm. Will have to start looking for another cause, I will start by removing all the waxoyl stuff from the mech then at least it will be a cleaner job.

90 degrees sounds about right - remember, to lock you turn the key 90 deg., then you return it 90 deg. back to vertical at which point you don't want it unlocking the car. Then to unlock you turn the key 90 deg. the other way, followed by 90 deg. back to vertical at which point you don't want it locking the car.

Anything less than 90 deg. slack would be a problem.

Check the rod from lock mech to handle, there threaded may have been wrongly adjusted

Well it has taken a time and I must have removed/refitted the lock 15 times but the lock now works as it should and it has proved the previous owner can never have had the lock working since the car's major restoration. It turns out the 'Claw' part could not rotate when the lock is fitted to the door (it is almost impossible to see this with everything fitted) and various parts of the lock mech were bent. I think all the damage to the mech was caused because the claw was hitting the side of the door frame and 'a lot of force' had been applied. The claw could not be shortened and the side of the door could not be moved so the handle had to be moved forward.
The door handle is located in the door skin by the mounting bosses locating in a couple of cutouts in the skin, you cannot moved the handle further forward of backward.
So I filed about 1mm off the the forward cutout which allowed the handle to move forward 1 mm and the claw could then rotate and everything worked. I can only assume that the replacement door skin was either fitted too far to the rear or the position of the handle cutout was not accurate. - Alan

ive had to file a bit from the door skins by the door handle, think the skins are not made right in that area
