    Recommendations for shipping company for a Stag

    Hi everyone.

    First post on the forum, and recent member of the club. I have just inherited my dad's beloved Stag, and i am looking to export it over to Denmark (where i live) from the UK so i can actually get to drive it!

    Can anyone recommend a good shipping company for this? It will be the car and some 'odds and sods' - ie, tools, spares and a work bench. I have had some quotes, but after the hassle i had with a supposedly reputable company when we moved over here, i would like to try and get some personal recommendations.

    Hi Mark,

    Can you not drive it over if it's roadworthy?

    If not, there is a member on here that does car transport.

      I did think about driving it over, but as i haven't actually driven it yet, the thought of such a long journey did rather put me off, especially as i am not that familiar with the engine. If i could get the shipping for a reasonable cost it then gives me the opportunity to bring all the other bits and bobs over.

        You don't have to be familiar with the engine to drive it, it's more or less bullet proof but if it's been standing...........You could hire a trailer but then you would have to return it, one way transport is your best option and as I say, I'm sure you will get an answer soon.

        Just read your other post and as it was used as a day to day car, I would have thought it very reliable to drive over, I think I would.

          it hasn't been standing too long. i've been going back and forth to the UK quite a few times over the last few months, and have been running the engine. I guess i just need to 'grow a pair' and get on with it :-)

            Get breakdown cover, can you go with 'another' car as a back up? Bet you will be surprised and elated if you did it, give it a go, what have you got to lose?

              it would just be me i would think. i very much doubt i could persuade the wife to follow me! it has a hard top - but i am not sure how good a fit it is, so i would probably leave that behind. The hood is quite new, so that should be ok. I think i'll look into the ferry costs for driving over, and then a quote for a part load for the odds and sods, and compare with a shipping quote. I am back in a week or so, so i think i'll take it out and get a feel for it, and then make a decision. Thanks for your advice, I think you may be right.

                I notice from your other post that it has a Rover engine in it.
                Would you be allowed to permanently "Import" it into Denmark with a non-standard engine?
                I know that you can't Import and register a car in Spain unless it has the original engine in it and is pretty much as it was manufactured.

                  it's going to be touch and go, and i am still getting to the bottom of it. The increase in bhp is just under the maximum allowed - but it should be possible.

                    Ferry is more expensive than the tunnel if cost is important. The hard top should fit, why dod you think it doesn't?

                      Hi Mark,

                      Good to hear that you are thinking of taking a Stag to Denmark. My family has a house in South Sweden and the only way now to get to Sweden or Denmark is to drive via a Channel Crossing, I use Harwich Hook. Unfortunately I have already done my trip to Sweden this year, I leave my daily driver there until October and then bring it home.

                      If you are willing to wait until next spring, I will be driving to Sweden again probably May and we could travel in company, I won't be in my Stag but I will be in a Citroen Picasso and likely to have some spare space to carry stuff if that helps. It is a very long drive, as I expect you may already know and I usually stop overnight on route as I do not like to drive very fast and I guess you may not want to in the Stag until you are more used to it.

                          When I fitted the hard top for the first time, it didn't seem to seat properly, but I'll try again. At the moment, it doesn't even look like I can drive it anyway, I can't get insurance in the UK to drive it, as I live in Denmark, and the intention is to export it and I can't get insurance in Denmark as it has UK plates. I can't get Danish plates until the car is over here and has gone through the various tests etc....it's turning out to be a logistical nightmare.
