    PWDA wiring

Hi All, Fitted a `new`(rebuilt) PWDA valve yesterday, on starting engine wire from PWDA got very hot enough to melt off the barbed connection thingy. I can`t understand what problem can be. Any advise?

Ray, am I right in understanding that the PWDA you refer to is the brake pressure imbalance sensor mounted on the inside of the wing? Have you disturbed any wiring other than removal of the switch unit on the PWDA?

Reason I ask is that what you describe is either a short-circuit or at least a big overload which I'm finding hard to understand. On mine at least (Mk2) the single wire to the PWDA switch is from the warning lamps (Handbrake light plus the red light on the dashboard itself). When the PWDA operates, it connects this wire to earth to complete the circuit to these bulbs. Therefore, taking account of the resistance of these bulbs, I'd expect a maximum of ~0.35Amps to flow through the PWDA.

If the answers to the questions above are "yes" and "no" respectively, then I'd check the bulbs in both the warning lamps as the only thought I have at present is that either a bulbholder or bulb has failed in a very low resistance mode allowing a big overload. Keep the battery disconnected as the brake warning lamp ciruits are unfused, straight off the battery via the ignition switch.

If you have an earlier car (up to Commission No LD2000), the wiring is a bit different according to my Haynes Manual in that the Handbrake and Brake warning lights are not in parallel. In this case, only the Brake light comes on with PWDA operation, and the expected current will be even smaller (~0.18Amps), so only the Brake light needs to be examined.

If the bulb(s) are OK, then I think you need to seek assistance from an auto-electrician, as it would seem that you have a wiring fault and there'd be a risk of damage to wiring insulation.

Incidentally, it looks like the PDWA shuttle is not centralised.

PM me if you want to talk this through.

    Good luck

On a similar note, I was tinkering last weekend and found a sensor on the rear LH corner of the engine with it's wire completely bare for the last 3 inches as if it had got too hot at some point in the past (I've sleeved it now), so was wondering what the sensor was, as it's spade tab is also loose.

        Temperature gauge sender.

Welcome to the forum. A little introduction would be nice........
