    oil in the 'v'?

    Hi all

I was tinkering about earlier with the kick down cable and carb idle speed to see if I could improve the auto gearbox clunking, when I noticed a small amount of oil in the v at the back of the engine near the bulkhead. it had burnt off by the time I came back from a short run, but cannot quite see where it's coming from. Is there a usual place to check for this, or might it be head gasket? The oil level appears to have stayed about right, but I am worried a little now!

    cheers

    Hi kevin.
Could be oil or water or a mix of both!! If its gone after a run more likly to be water. Could be from a number of places, inlet manifold gaskets or the water pump. If the car hasnt been used for a while, it could be the seal on the water pump, dont worry too much about it as long as it dosnt get worse it will probably seal with use, but if the leak worsens, investigage further as it could be failing, or as i said before the inlet manifoldgasgets failing. Dont get too paranoid about it just yet, lots of stags are a bit incontinent at some point, just moniter for now.
    Good luck
    Dave

that's good advice - I hope to be the car into a local specialist to be fettled in the next few weeks, so I'll get them to take a look and add it to the (ever increasing!) list of things to sort.

If its water put some K Seal in the radiator and have a good run, appears t have cured mine, but I still occasionally get fuel overflow in the V.

                  Hi Kevin,
My mean green machine had 'moisture' in the V. I think it was a mixture of oil from the gasket to the cam covers (now fixed), and leaking coolant. On investigation,I discovered the slightest of leaks coming from the heater return pipe where it joined the top pipe into the heater matrix. I tried adding a second jubilee clip but this failed to stop the constant weeping onto the V. I say constant as this only happened after running the car. On removal of the heater return pipe it was found to be corroded where it joined the rubber hose. It was replaced with a new stainless steel pipe since when no more wet V or loss of coolant. Suggest you check for the same.
                  Best wishes

I was going to use Tim Collins at The Vehicle Restoration Co in Middleton on Sea near Bognor? Do you know them?

Hi Kevin, I've heard of them but honestly do not know of anybody that has used them. Wouldn't say they were a Stag specialist by any means. The offer is still there if you want a second opinion, let me know.

Hi Kevin. Get Bob to look at it first, he will give you an honest opinion of what is required. He certainly knows his onions (and stags!)
