    I use an open-ended spanner on the crankshaft bolt. Can't see how the gearbox oil cooler would interfere, think mine's too low and too far forward.

    Use a Stilson on the sleeve at the back of the pulley. Reach it from above on the left side.

    Success with the Stillsons from above on the crankshaft, with the timing quadrant swung out of the way. Static timing set with No. 2 cylinder at TDC - removed nearside rocker cover to confirm. New distributor installed, with rotor pointing towards No. 2 plug lead. I hope to get the rest of the new Lumenition installed and the timing set with a strobe light later this week, or at the weekend.
    It may be that on some cars with a 4 row radiator there is room to get a spanner on the crankshaft, but not on mine. The 4 row radiator (from E J Ward) with a boss, and a 15.2" Revotech fan and fitting kit, with radiator mounted thermostat have transformed the cooling. Just as well as I want to take the car on the Continent.

    You are wasting your time Rob. The OP has already said he can't get a spanner on the crankshaft bolt, and others have said similar, so what would we know? I've only been doing it that way for 20-odd years, even with a 4-row radiator fitted.

    Ian P has kindly PM'd me with details of how to ensure that No. 2 cylinder is a TDC.
    I think I have correctly understood, and attach a photo of the nearside (left) camshaft, which I think shows No. 2 cylinder at TDC.
    If I have misunderstood can someone please point this out, and say why.
    I cannot find how to attach a photo to a PM to send to Ian P.
    I bought my Stag last year, and have found the Forum invaluable.

    Many thanks. Yes, I can see how removing the nearside timing quadrant securing bolt and slackening the offside one, so that I can swing the quadrant to the offside will enable me to get Stillsons on the crankshaft.

    (Unfortunately I cannot get a spanner on the crankshaft end nut - as suggested by several members - because I have fitted a 4 row radiator and there is now insufficient room between the rear face of the radiator and the front end of the crankshaft.)

    Advice on setting the static timing would be mush appreciated - I can see that it would be easy to get it 180 degrees out. Ian P sent me a PM last night (I was out) about this kindly offering to give advice, and I have replied, but I do not know when he will see the reply and be able to give that advice.

    I turned my engine over using a open ended spanner on the crank pulley.
    Mine is also a Mk2 Auto, just mind your knuckles on the rad

    Open ended spanner on the crankshaft bolt? There should be enough space, but slip a sheet of cardboard in against the radiator to prevent damage.

    That is almost a last resort - I can imagine the hours of trial and error!
    I will try it tomorrow (Sunday), and if that fails the automatic gearbox oil cooler will have to come off.

    The only other thing I can think of then is small cranks on the key and keep checking to see if you've landed somewhere at TDC.
