Distributor fitting to Mark II automatic

Ian P has kindly PM'd me with details of how to ensure that No. 2 cylinder is a TDC.
I think I have correctly understood, and attach a photo of the nearside (left) camshaft, which I think shows No. 2 cylinder at TDC.
If I have misunderstood can someone please point this out, and say why.
I cannot find how to attach a photo to a PM to send to Ian P.
I bought my Stag last year, and have found the Forum invaluable.

When I was setting up my MkII automatic, here's the procedure I followed:
      1. Set gear lever in neutral.
      2. Rotate engine using a spanner on the crankshaft bolt until you get the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley to line up with the 0deg mark on the timing bracket - confirm you're not 180 deg out by ensuring No 2 piston is at the top and the two corresponding valves are closed.
Notes. a) Its helps to have the front of the car jacked up so that you can reach the bolt from the underside. b) Protect the fins of the radiator with a thin piece of cardboard c) The spark plugs can be either in or out (mine were in).
      3. Insert the distributor making sure that the final position of the rotor arm is pointing towards No2 spark plug lead.
4.Set up of the Lumenition is then in accordance with the static timing instructions found at this link http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/ItemFile...stallation.pdf
This should get you to the point where the engine will start, fine tune of the distributor position can now be carried out with a timing light connected to No2 spark plug lead and IIRC setting the crankshaft timing mark to align with the 12 deg mark on the timing bracket.
      Good luck.
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!

You are wasting your time Rob. The OP has already said he can't get a spanner on the crankshaft bolt, and others have said similar, so what would we know? I've only been doing it that way for 20-odd years, even with a 4-row radiator fitted.

Success with the Stillsons from above on the crankshaft, with the timing quadrant swung out of the way. Static timing set with No. 2 cylinder at TDC - removed nearside rocker cover to confirm. New distributor installed, with rotor pointing towards No. 2 plug lead. I hope to get the rest of the new Lumenition installed and the timing set with a strobe light later this week, or at the weekend.
It may be that on some cars with a 4 row radiator there is room to get a spanner on the crankshaft, but not on mine. The 4 row radiator (from E J Ward) with a boss, and a 15.2" Revotech fan and fitting kit, with radiator mounted thermostat have transformed the cooling. Just as well as I want to take the car on the Continent.

Use a Stilson on the sleeve at the back of the pulley. Reach it from above on the left side.

I use an open-ended spanner on the crankshaft bolt. Can't see how the gearbox oil cooler would interfere, think mine's too low and too far forward.
