    Whatever has happened to Gunk!

Thinking I would forsake my usual petrol for cleaning massively greasy parts I thought I would switch to something less flammable and buy, for first time for many many years, my old favorite 'Gunk'. Oh dear, the 'eco warriors ' have been and reformulated it with what seems to be, or at least it has the same effect, tap water with a squeeze of lemon.
Won't be using it on engines any more, will probably give the rest of the tin to my son to clean up during nappy changes of my new grandson!

I built myself a parts washer some years ago and it uses some fluid which comes from the local motor factors. It seems quite effective in the pumped system so might be OK brushed. I get it in large drums (where it's pumped out and drains back) but I think they also have it in smaller quantities.

    Cheers,
    Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!

I haven't tried this on heavily contaminated surfaces yet, but it works very well as a general engine and other areas cleaner, even diluted. http://www.bilthamber.com/car-cleani...sing/surfex-hd

Gunk, and other old favourites such as Hammerite, Nitromors, etc. are now a shadow of their former selves thanks to the eco-warriors.....

I have used Jizer in a past life when I was at sea, it is still available but whether it also has the goodness removed I don't know!

Gunk is now inside your engine according to the fuel company that has petrol piranhas

We used to use it offshore, Danny, until it was banned under the pollution at sea legislation. The only stuff we could use were the citrus based detergents, which weren't much use......

I have used Jizer for years as it seems to be more effective than others I have tried and the directional spray nozzle is useful for localized cleaning of in situ parts. I have not noticed any reduction in effectiveness of recently purchased cans. Its available from several outlets including Amazon and Halfrauds.

Alan, nip down to halfords and get some Trichloroethylene,

I was gutted when I used up all my dads stash but probably for the best.

A mate (coincidentally shotgun for Le Mans this year) worked for a chemical company 30 years back and could get Methylene Chloride by the gallon for free - it was used in some flavour stripping process, and I believe also the active element in the original Nitromors.

That stuff could degrease/decarbonise engine parts for the Olympics, but if you got it on your hands it hurt like hell, and stripped the fats from your skin - lethal stuff

God I used to bathe in that stuff back in the day , having a dad working in aerospace had its advantages .

Yep you could degrease an engine with the fumes from it imagine what it does to your lungs.
Expensive but I use brake and clutch cleaner in an aerosol for hard to get at degreasing now.

I remember the stuff well. a favourite trick as an apprentice was, at teatime when everyone had got their tea out of the 'machine', to dip a matchstick in the Trich bath and just touch someones plastic cup near the bottom as you went by, you would be well down the corridor before their cup mysteriously sprang a leak and emptied itself.

Used to mix it 50/50 with white spirit for degreasing air frames in enclosed spaces, use to float out of the aircraft for a tea break
