Challenge for the day - Whats the cost?

OK, just looking at Rimmer Bros website for some prices of bits - I have a few items of trim I am about to ebay and was curious on prices.

So here is my thought. If you built a car (mk1 or mk2) from the ground up having started from zero - only using parts from Rimmer Bros (or other) what is it going to cost you to build a complete car? Also lets assume the labour to do this is feet of engineering is FREE - as in all good TV resto car programs!

Anyone worked this out accurately before?

You would also have to go down the second-hand route as not all parts are available through Rimmers

        The cost would be frightening!
If you want an idea of cost, take a door and all its individual fittings and price that up. [obviously a few parts would have to be second hand, as no longer available new] As I am rebuilding my doors at present, I know how many parts are involved, luckily with a spare set of doors, I need few new parts, and able to recondition almost everything.
        Dave.

Probably a lot less than on a modern car.

How much are we allowing for a bare shell?

              I'll take a punt at a £100k, but I've not worked it out,just a guess.

Whilst I'd like to think you're not far out, consider this:
A "comparable" V8 engined four seater cabriolet/ convertible would likely cost £40 - £50k if not more. Depends whether you look at a Beemer/Benz etc., or a Maserati/XK8/XKR.

I suspect that to buy and build any of the above from new parts would at least double if not treble the cost and, despite the added/extra technology, cars have supposedly got cheaper in relative terms.

So I suspect it could be more like £150 -£200k but God knows how much of that would be labour? So a completely rebuilt Stag selling for £30k - Bargain, buy em all.........

                  From the net:

When i was at college we were shown this study and a new fiesta cost £7k and the cost of building it in parts was around £53k.

On the other hand, it only costs 20K to build a £5,000,000 McLaren..............

It just goes to show that buying a cheap car, eg stag, which needs a lot of new parts, then restoring it is not going to make you rich.

Quick way to do this sum?

                        Why not see if you can coerce those members who have an interest to tackle seperate elements of the task;

e.g. Dave (nott) could price up the doors as he already knows most of the answers 'cos he's refurbing his own. Alan (Stag157.7) will know the answers to carbs and guages. etc.

I'll add a (straight out of the shrink-wrap) Exchange Refurbished Engine £3K. (Stag Classics - no commercial interests, etc.)

Others will know of their own bits and this should/will make the task less onerous than one person researching the whole thing.

                        Simples no?

OK, I've priced a single door with hinges, glass, handles and most fittings including seals, screws and brackets. It comes to approx £1,450.00
[eg recon door shell £455, window lift and motor £205 etc etc]
About half the parts are just second hand as no new parts available.

From a rolling shell to a road going car.
I spent £10000 on the total restoration and I did ALL the work myself. (Some places that's way too obvious!)
To build the car from parts, if it were possible which it isn't as there are too many "no longer available" bits, you would easily spend 10 times the amount I did and much more than that again if you have to pay for much of the labour involved. (I would pay to have the body work sprayed if I were to do it again. That would make my £1000 candy paint job closer to £6000)
