    Power Steering

Hi, the sterring on my Mk1 seems to have deteriorated. The steering wheel used to turn smoothly, was very light and the power evenly spread across the full turning circle. But now it seems tighter, with a notchy feel and seems to want to stay in a straight line withrestistance to be turned. The pump is toppedup with fluid with now obvious signs of leaks, any ideas? Belt slipping? Its worth checking - get someone to turn the wheel with the engine runningwhilst you observe the belt.

      Hi Russ

I have exactly the same problem on my MK 1. Assistance seems to come and go, rack definitely feels sticky/notchy when turning from straight ahead, particularly when steering left and then wheel is reluctant to self centre. Strange thing is that it's not consistent.

So far changed and adjusted PAS belt, without any improvement.

      Had tracking adjusted, no change.

Just purchased recon pump, which needs to be fitted when I have a free weekend.

But suspect the rack, which I'm leaving until last as it's the more difficult of the jobs. Also heard that there are some dodgy recon racks out there - has anyone experienced this or can recommend a good quality source if the pump doesn't cure it.

Let me know how you get on and I'll do the same.

      Best of luck.

        Andy,

Thanks, I'll certainly let you know how I get on, particularly as you've desribed the exact symptoms I'm experiencing! Russ

Andy, How are you doing with the steering? Mine has now dropped all the fluid onto the car park at work, lost the power completely and I've decided to replace the rack (and now the pump). Could not find a problem with any other steering component so I'm assuming the rack is the source of the symptoms, Hope you're having more luck! Russ.

            Andy,

Ireplaced the rack over the winter, bought it from Paddocks in Chester, so far no problems. However I also replaced the track rod ends and one of them failed in the MOT test last week, it has done less than 50 mls, so will be taking it back to Paddocksbut I'm sure I won't get the cost of replacing itback.

Bit of a fiddly job and sometimes is easier with 2 people when reconecting the steeringlinkage and connecting the hydraulic pipes is a pain in the a--e, just make sure they are not cross threaded.

            Have Fun

Russ - Sorry to hear of your bad luck, luckily mine still has the fluid in the system, but used car on Sunday and intermittent fault was still there. Was planning a pump change on Bank Holiday Monday, but rain stopped play (fair weather mechanic). Let me know how you get on with your pump and rack change if you beat me to it.

Steve - thanks for advice and info onthe Paddock's rack, will check the track rod ends at same time.

I also have an intermediate problem.

About once every 5 weeks she will deposit an amount of powered steering oil from the OS gaiter, then will be perfectly ok for another 5 weeks.

There is a valve in the pump, have been told it’s a pressure relief valve. Have cleaned it, and its made it a lot better but still leaks but only every 7 to 8 weeks

I have had these Steering symptoms ever since owning my Stag. Occasional notchyness, seems overly light etc. Last week I drained off some fluid and put in a Forte power steering addative. I haven't done many miles yet butwhat a difference! much more feel to the steering.

It's a cheap fix and worth a try!

Most parts factors will sell some type of addative for PAS, Wynns is the most common, Forte is only available to the trade.

                    Update on my steering woes.

Have now replaced pump twice, first pump (eBay purchase) looked identical, but wasn't until fitted did I realise that the filler was canted over at 45 degrees facing inner wing. This made filling and checking the level a challenge!

Anyone know what this pump might be off? :?Then I can eBay it correctly.

Second pump from Paddocks was correct and works well possibly better than original. Initial thoughts that I'd cracked it faded after half an hour of driving when the old symptoms returned! So looks like steering rack replacement.

Apart from rack is there anything else I should order?

Any hints or tips on rack replacement appreciated (I have workshop manual and Haynes guides for reference).

                    Cheers Andy

Guys, I disconnected my steering pump and the symptoms recurr periodically, so it's time to tackle the rack replacement - anyone found an alternative solution? Russ.

                        Update on my steering problems.

Having replaced pump and still getting the tightness in the steering I was about to replace the rack. Discussed issue at the Beds N&N and was advised to check the universal joints on the lower steering shaft as these have been known to seize up. Sprayed a liberal dose of WD40 on the upper and lower joints and left to work overnight.

Don't want to tempt fate but a week later and several longish journeys and all is well with the steering.

So rack replacement is on holdand a beer is owed to Steve at Beds group.

Very simple solution but definitely worth a try.

Hi, I tried the WD40 solution on the lower steering arm and it worked! The steering is no longer notchy and the 'caster' effect of the steering coming back to a straight line has returned. I would recommend you try this solution before getting the tool box out again! Russ

I have had the same symptoms, and having just read the comment about lubrication have just been out in the garage and sprayed my column UJ. Lets see if it makes a difference.

Stag power steering racks were never the best in the business according to sources I have spoken with. One former Triumph salesman says they had one new car on the forecourt that if you started the engine it would turn the steering from lock to lock on its own and would only stop when you held the wheel.

I have had my stag about ten years and replaced the rack about 5000 miles ago with a unit from Paddocks. The problem is that these units are all rebuilds, and may never have been very good when new.
