I'm quite happy with the sentiment off snapping their stupid little necks - but nature has given them the ability to reproduce very quickly - too quick to keep up with in summer. If there's a habitat they'll find it. So let the critters go eat someone else's car and not mine. I'll keep the sound deterrents on. Seem to work.

Hadn't thought about pets - not sure - I've only got kids but I suppose their hearing gets high up the register. No chance I'd hear it - my hearing aids cut out around 7K.

I will get another couple of ultrasonic thingies - it was one of those that finally expelled them from the house on what seems like a permanent basis. Poison works but they keep coming back plus they tend to hoard the poison in their lairs (rats and mice) and you occasionally come across large piles of the husks in hidden corners - not so good if you have kids, ducks and chickens running around. I have always found the problem worse in the winter as they tend to come inside for warmth - in the summer they are not a so much of a problem - apart from the rats stealing the chicken and duck eggs!

We used to have a cat who loved to hunt them down in the garden. Then the pub behind us reopened as an Indian restaurant. One night soon after he disappeared - I suspect into the curry.

So I'll stick with the sonic repellents.

Don't forget, rats are cannibalistic so if you poison them and do not find the bodies, the others will eat them. When this happens they too will die etc. What is happening though,is the rats are becoming resistant to the poison. Years ago they were building up resistance to warfarin. That is why we have to put down stronger and more pottent poisons. If you have rats or mice the electronic deterrents are the way to go.

            Hi Roger,
Did you find out what was causing your noise ?, I ask because mine has started making a noise as well, appears to be coming from the top of the nearside head, had the cam out todauy and checked all the buckets and shims all appears correct ?, need to borrow a torque wrench to tighten down the cam bearings before I can re-start her and see if anything has changed.

            Regards Paul.

No, not yet. My noise comes from "the middle of the block" sounds the same every where - even standing at the rear of the car you can hear it underneath. Psychologically it sounds louder with the oil filler off but when you put your ear to the filler hole (it gets oily!) I can't convince my self I can determine what it is. The only clue is that it is around half engine speed.

I'm off to take it for an MoT this morning (the car not the noise) and then coming back to start stripping the engine until I find it. Will start with the front cover/timing chain and jackshaft. Hope to post some pics and some videos with sound. I'll do that on a separate thread.

Your description sounds different to mine as you can locate it to the top nearside. I suspect yours could be a loose valve guide or a worn cambucket/head. In theory you should be able to remove the camcover and use a listening stick (with the engine running) to go along all the points next to the buckets and locate the offending one. You have to relatively quick as oil does get "sprayed up".

Noise from around number six cylinder ? That's the usual one for some reason

                Cheers
