Here's the full story, as short as I can make it....

My pal runs a garage and he does all my MOT's and tyres, servicing etc. and I asked him if he could supply ATF, he rang his supplier in front of me and asked for DII to be delivered to my work COD, so the fault is with a 3rd party. Wish me luck!

      Thanks for the replies, guys.

I drained the box via the filler pipe union as per ROM and only about 2.5 litres came out. This was fairly dirty, so I put 2.5 litres of new fluid in, drove the car around the block and drained it again. I have just been on a 20-odd mile run, so tomorrow I will probably drain and refill again. If I take the sump off to clean as per Sheepdip's reply, am I likely to need a new gasket/seal, or is it a re-useable rubber one?

I have used Comma AQF fluid, as I couldn't find anything else available. None of the motor shops (including Halfrauds) seem to stock auto transmission fluid other than intop-up bottles. The blurb on the container says it is suitable for Borg Warner automatic transmissions and torque converters, and exceedsFord specificationM2C 33F/G.

      Still learning about auto-boxes :?.

Did my sump recently Dave, had approx' 4 litres come out, beware when you refill as i tried to put that amount straight back in only to find it pouring out of the breather due to an air lock. The new gasket was made of cork, dont know if rubber ones are available.

            Baz,

You are right about the volume, and only about 1/2 a litre went up my sleeve :X! With all the bolts out the sump remained in place until I managed to free it, and then it fell in my drip tray. I have just spent the last 1/2-hour cleaning up the drive before SWMBO has a strop!

Got a new gasket from the local gearbox specialists before I started. Just as well, they are thick brown paper and the one fitted was well and truly stuck. The new one won't come off too easily next time either with a smear ofWellseal on both sides.

Surprising how much 'mud' there was in the bottom of the sump. Cleaned it all out, along with the filter and magnet. Put in 2 litres, turned the engine and put in another 2 and the level is correct with the engine running. Now it is p***ng down, so will have to wait to test drive.

:shock:Please don't tell me you've used sealing compound on the gasket Dave.....

Biggest cardinal sin of autobox building - tiny bits of sealant break off inside, get past the strainer (or gradually block it) and gum up the governer and valve block.......

Just a thin smear of Wellseal, Russ. No more than would hold the gasket in place. Wellseal is a thin, brown liquid; not a silicon-type goo. It is not even as thick as Hylomar.

Let's hope that it was a VERY thin smear, and you have good fortune... the unfortunate thing about transmission fluid is it's ability to clean and dislodge - if you don't believe it next time your hands are absolutely black and filthy after playing with greasy oily bits - you know what I mean, the sort of filth that doesn't get out of the skin for days, no matter how much you scrub - try a handful of trans fluid rubbed in for a minutebefore the swarfega...... you'll be amazed!

If any Wellseal has squeezed out inside, be assured the fluid will shift it......

Last time I had the engine out I sent the BW35 in to an autobox specialist to have the bands adjusted, filters cleaned, front and rear seals changed and a new sump gasket fitted, all for the purpose of stopping leaks and stopping it slipping between gear changes.

It now leaks worse than before, still slips because it's knackered anyway, and I should have put the money toward a ZF conversion.

The guy only charged 60 quid though so it wouldn't have gone far !!!

I'm now hoping that it will blow up completely one day and I will be fully justified in shelling out 1800 notes on a new gearbox, complete with overdriven top gear.

I wasn't aware that dexron 2 was no good for the BW35, maybe that's why mine is shot. I've got a feeling it was shot long before I had the car though, it's never been right in 14 years.

I had to source 25 litres of Castrol TQF recently, I think what came was a shell donax equivalent. It was for a BW box in an Alvis TD21, I think it's called a DG box. John at Specialised products ltd in Ferndown was vey helpful, knew exactly what I was asking for,it cost about 70 quid in the end.

If you're worried about the oil level in the gearbox, consider this...

The ZF box in my BMW 330d has no dipstick, andaccording to BMWthe oildoesn't need changing, It's lifed with the vehicle. 123k and counting
