    Phil,

Glad you have managed to track the source of the leak. At least the tonneau drain pipes are an easy fix. The windscreen may be sorted with one of the proprietry sealers available from the local accessory shop or Halfords.

The door trim clips are a fiddle, but can be fitted with a home-made tool. Get a piece of metal, similar thickness to body panel steel, about 6 inches long by 3/4 inch wide. Bend it at one end into a flat 'u'-shape so that it will hold one of the trim clips. You can then offer the trim up to the door, with the window fully down. Insert the tool in the window reveal and pull the clip up over the trim and the door skin return. The attached drawing may explain better.

        Phil,

Glad you deciphered the diagram and explanantion.

Since you ask, I have had my Stag since August 1989. I am the 8th owner, and have virtually no history of it before i bought it.

The only time my car goes into a professional garage is for its annual MOT or for body work. Last year was the first time I have had an MOT refusal, and it was expected due to corrosion on the underside of the front chassis rail.

During my ownership I have stripped and rebuilt the engine (twice - long story ), stripped and rebuilt the gearbox (recently), stripped and rebuilt the power steering, front suspension, rear suspension, brake master and slave cylinders, clutch master and slave cylinders, dashboard and instruments. I have also recently fitted new cylinder heads. About 3 years ago I stripped the front seats and fitted new side foam.

I have had to call the breakdown services twice in this time. Once when a rear wheel stub axle sheared at 70 mph and I lost the rear wheel. (Laundry services also called for :shock. The second time was when the gearbox seized. I had totally underestimated how much oil was leaking from it and had not checked the level for a long time. I bought a s/hand box to get back on the road, but this box started to get noisy over the last couple of years. Hence the recent rebuild, and it is now lovely and quiet and a dream to use.

I also totally stripped the hard top a few years ago and cut out all the rot, bought a MIG welder and had a play until I was able to replace all the rot with new steel. The shell was then painted before I fitted new headlining, seals, rear window, etc.

Next job is to strip and rebuild the carbs. The kits are on the garage bench waiting for the next rainy day.

The car is basically original, but I have added my own personal touches. These include:

Front & rear fog lights, towbar, indicator buzzer (got fed up leaving the indicators on with roof down on sunny day), lights-on warning buzzer, oil pressure gauge (in place of clock), Jaguar clock (in place of ash tray), American front and rear 'cruise lights', American 'Federal' Mk1 front head rests, Astrali wooden steering wheel, 15" 'minilight' wheels, CD/radio with 6 speakers, hazard lights (not standard on Mk1), spin-on oil filter.

All of the above could be removed if I suddenly got the 'Originality Bug'.

Total mileage on the car is now 184,000. She is in respectable condition, but sadly needs repairs to the n/side rear wing. I am patiently waiting for SOCTFL to produce decent repair panels from the two new original wings I put them onto about 18 months ago.

I am not a professional mechanic -I am a qualified Merchant Navy Master Mariner.Just had plenty of experience of DIY mechanics on many cars and motor cycles over the past 35 years. Keeps me sane and I enjoy it!

Hi Dave! tremendous! sounds a superb specimen- I shudder to think how many hours you must have put in! I commend you!- like youhave decided to treat her to some music mods- ave been a bit sneaky and made up some timberpanels foam and vinyl covered to accomodate some 9x6 SONY elyptical speakers over cubbys! made em for under 3 quid !- am dead chuffed with result! she also has a 150watt slave amp neatly fiitted in the newly carded boot ! I jigged new panels using old tatty as templates and re-carpeted from a quality roll of black with pvc liner- all neatly guntacked!- have even vynled boot boards!- plus she now has a top quality underfelt liner as well.!in cockpit also!-spent ages fitting a a new dash trimkit real swine of a job- precision an absolute must! have fitted on my other cars but this one was awkward! but looks great if I say so myself- also decided to fit bigger round front jbl speakers in front-6"- involved some tricky chain drilling and filing to clear- but end result is pleasing! I have just recieved some stunning "cosmic" bucket seats-bought of EBAY...on offer at £68 the pair!!!!!!!!! they are fab and rails are within spec to fit....but thinking of possibly using the old seat adjuster with them?- not done all the research yet ?! will forward some piccies for interest when all done! best of luck with your super STAG! hope I can get mine up to envied quality of yours sometime soon! thanks for all the help! really appreciated!

              Phil,

As I mentioned in my earlier 'history' post, I fitted a new headlining, if that is what you mean. Some hard tops have a vinyl cover, rather than paint. Which do you want to renew?

I posted some information on this a while back. Type Hard Top into the search panel. This may take you straight there:

                        Phil,

Not too sure what you mean. The quarterlight (723348) relates to the hood fitted to Mk1 Stags. These have a 3-window hood, but you don't see many nowadays as they have a tendency to crack where the quarterlight window folds.

As for your 'gape' it may be worth posting a picture so we can see what the problem is.
