What will 6K get me?

Many thanks to those who replied to my previous post, Everday Stag. It's really great to know that people are still drving these cars as often as they can.

So,on towhat I can get for my money. Can anyone advise me on what condition I could expect on a 6K budget?

Graham,

From a dealer, probably not much. From a private sale anything from a heap of trouble to a fine car, depending on how good you are at spotting problems. If you haven't got experience of Stag I would strongly recommend you get in touch with someone who has. The SOC has lots of knowledgable people in every area. Get in touch. Look at good cars and bad cars, and take someone with you. Most of all, unless it is exceptional, don't buy the first one you see.

There is plenty of good information in the buyers guide on this website.

Hi Graham- as a recent STAG purchaser... totally agree with DJT on all his comment! I trooped all over before finding a generally acceptaptable MK2 specimen!....I sourced through Classic Cars for sale website! what grabbed my interest from the off was the staggering ammout that had been spent on this in its lifetime- over 13k! all recorded by recognised motor engineers- virtualy every thing at some point renewed body panels inners outer sills brakes clutch - and included a full orriginal re built engine with german chains reground crank has less than 18k on this rebuild and am delighted to say absolutley no overheat probs! since aquiring have done a complete internal re-furb- and is taking shape quite nicely!!! on the down side of things annoyin things are poorly fitted wing and door... and rain is creeping in from somewhere into the rear floor panels( softop fitted but that is fine -prob elsewhere? am informed B post drain poss area/ but still not resolved- any other advice out there guys!!!! ...

.in short can only say I found some real tat around ! do your research well- dont buy the first you see and try and get as much history you can find! you like me will find STAG has fantastic back up ! supplies and all the guys in the forum are great sources of info! Mine cost me sizeably less that your intended budget!!! ....0n reflection I think I could have chose a little better and blown more on one...Think you could do well at this intended figure! if you research well!

£6K? Speaking as a (very) recent Stag owner, I can only speak from personal experience, but £6k should buy you a very decent Stag indeed. I paid considerably less for mine, and while it did have some engine issues (which are now sorted), the overall condition (minus tyres) was very good indeed, and I'm well happy with my purchase. While I do value the comments of the more experienced owners above, I found that a couple of months of checking available cars on ebay (where I eventually bought my Stag, but ONLY after viewing) and the monthly Classic Car mags provided enough info for me to feel comfortable enough to buy one. I did view five cars before buying mine, which helped build up an idea of what to expect. As long as you're ready to lie down underneath a car, and to insist on a decent test drive up to temperature, then you can bereasonably sure of a car's condition. Sure, there are going to be issues with any used car, let alone a Stag that's 30+ years old, but intuition coupled with a bit of common sense should see you right. Good luck.

Some good advice from Phil and Dave. Certainly agree on the dealer point, there are more than one or two who seem to make alivingselling Stags atinsanely inflated prices. There's a Stag buyers guide in the current edition of Classics Monthly and they reckon don't pay anymore than £8k even for a good car - good advice in my view. You certainly need to buy with extreme care. For a car with a relatively small production run, a surprising number have survived, but loads of them seem to be fairly rough as seen on Ebay most days. It's easy to spend a few thousand quid on sorting out the mechanicals and bodywork so buy the best you can even if that means spending closer to £7k - for that demand goodhistory, upwards of £5k worth of bills documenting evidence of restoration (engine and bodywork), excellent bodywork/paint, interior/hood and chrome etc.

I paid just over £6k for my stag via ebay in aug 05 after viewing just one other stag for sale at half the price ( well ropey) I am very happy with my car and agree with the previous comment, use your common sense and I'm sure you will do alright. As with any car purchase there are risks but the pleasure associated with owning the car you always wanted outways most ( if not all ) the downsides.

It's the little things that often put me off buying a car. For a £6k car the enginebay looks shabby, but in particular take a look at thepaint on the bolts and rubber seal on the offside suspension turret. In my book a car that's been well cared for woudn't be presented for sale like that, not to mention the corrosion around the brake cylinder/servo and untidy wiring to the Kenlowe (fixed to the petrol pipe!). In my experience these are tell tale signs of a tarted up car.

Looking at the pictures of that blue one at quillers I'm confused about the top of the dash.Whats the deal with the bolts on the dash under the windscreen in picture 20:?

Are they bolts or press studs - previous owners attempt at fitting a toneau cover?

Hi Bill, I think you may be right and that they are press-studs, plus the description says full tonneau.

I think I will stillbe picky and say that it has definitely been tarted up in the paintwork as you have already pointed out, and if that is the case then what else has been bodged...sorry!.. tarted up?

Pretty colour, and the original colour according to the commission plate. Respray not very thorough looking at the door shuts, and I would be in no hurry to open the bonnet!

N/S wing has been replaced by the looks, and the welding not too neat above the bonnet stay bar channel.

Looks like new spark plugs, so may well have been serviced recently.

Front seat side panel foam has gone. Budget £25 per seat for new foam, and a lot more if you get them fitted professionally, evenusing the existing covers.

Underside?

Would need eyes wide open for one like this. Having said that, it may be perfect mechanically and that counts for a lot with the Stag.

I have a tow bar on my Stag, purely for a small utility trailer. This trailer is meant to be 5cwt capacity (250 Kg), but i have had it full of chippings on the back of the Stag in a quarry and weighed at around half a tonne! Stag didn't even know it was there.:shock:

There are many who have used the Stag for towing, but from what I hear, it puts extra pressure on the cooling system if it is at all marginal.
